if its going to be knocked about you may want to look at 6 8 layers of lacquer

Well, yeah mainly to prevent wear on areas around the grip etc.

So, can you recommend or set out a procedure...what sort of base undercoat etc? was thinking white as its a light colour blue topcoat.

Also...any particular type of paint...can I bake it on the oven door on a low heat etc? (electric fan oven!)

no just got to halfords and buy 2 primers heavy and a lite start with heavy, to seal the wood. loads of lite layers. same with the paint. as long as you take your time i dont see it being to much of a problem.

What's Heavy primer compared to light primer...?
Didnt know there was more than one type.

Do you know of a particlularily tough lacquer and do I need to use gloss or will satin do ok...?

Righty ho.

I was going to use a thin coat of Acrylic wood primer first, to seal the wood up..also Acrylic has no skin, so cant chip or peel.

I assume most undercoat would go on this fine.

Lump: So i can gently sand between coats of the metallic apart from the final coat. What about the lacquer...can I should I wet sand
between the coats of lacquer?

How long should I leave coats to dry before sanding or recoating?

no sand up to the first coat of paint, get that right then paint. satin coat may not be a car paint so stick with car paint throughout
