There was a newspaper in the states called "The Good News". It folded in 2 weeks. People aren't interested in good news :( We should just bring back the gladitorial games and let the public get it out that way with convicts. 2 birds one stone.
Or bring back the death penalty like the papers have been saying

"You hear that lads? Ian Huntly was strung up yesterday"

Good news all around

the press agreed NOT to cover him on his tour and now F it up for him and the troops around him
I think thay where allowed to cover him but the deal was made that it was NOT TO BE BROADCAST or made public untill after he returned.
As soon as the yanks made it public ( I think it was the yanks anyway) the media got automatic rights to run the story. Media are a bunch of feckwits really:mad:

Props to him for stepping up to the plate and actually getting out there and doing his job.
Would have been a political disaster if the taliban got there mits on him though. Probably not a bad thing that hes back now.

In keeping with this thread though, I agree with Lump. I'm getting sick of hearing about muggings, stabbings and murders on the regional news and terrorism and war on the national news. Would be nice to hear some good stuff for a change.

Yup, now every extremist in Europe knows he's in Helmand Province and gonna be gunning for him and anyone around him.

Never trust the media
Not actually the UK's fault this time... blame our Atlantic neighbours
but knight you are happy to see the pictures ? so you and the like make the press go after these images  and its not whos fault it was, its about the other 10 15 troops who are serving with him are also at risk

I'm only happy that he actually did his job and went out there, not happy about the pictures themselves. I would have been just as happy if i saw them in 3 months time.

I know what you mean though mate, the lads who are alongside him must know that they are standing next to someone on the Talibans Most Wanted list :(

The $hit thing is now they know he's in HP so are gonna be putting more manpower into finding him if he's on thier turf

To be honest I dont think that the lads fighting alongside him will give much of a toss. I also dont think that the taliban will care too much either during a firefight.
At the end of the day they are all wearing the same kit and look very much the same. It would be near on impossible to actually distinguish between any soldier in full kit, unshaven etc etc in normal conditions let alone in combat situations such as when those guys are out and about in afghanistan.
(sorry...I'm a squaddie brat and also joined up myself for a short while:eek:)

I think the real danger would have come from identification due to media attention whilst back in base etc. That is why he has now been pulled back from active service. The risk posed whilst out on patrol would have been the same for every member of his team regardless of who they are.

I agree lump, i also stopped buying newspapers because of this, remember years ago there used to be a warning if it was the least bit "gory" now it's just dead bodies everywhere. it's just media insensitivity, where the next image or story has to be worse than the last.:(

This reflects more on our culture (perhaps human nature, even) than on the media itself. Marx would say it's due to our alienation from the world through technology separating us from reality. Images of images and all that. How real is the suffering to most people who skim through the newspaper? Blame capitalism and "progress".

What brilliant ideas! :D

I heard something the other day about a town/city (I forget where) saying how terrible it was that their prison was overflowing with prisoners.....(well, see above for the answer!)

and yet they were amazed that the crime rate for the area had dropped by 50% or something...Duh, the crime rate has dropped because the criminals are locked up!! The media are just stupid!!
