Hi, I'm new and was just wondering whats the best starter marker for me? It has to be able to run on air (don't know if they all do?? i went to a paintball site and they used c02) :) and preferably under £100

Thanks!!

all markers available from a store currently will run on HPA (high pressure air) For under £100 i would recommend looking at a second hand marker. i think an SLG from a previous year would come to under £100 and apart from the 09's( maybe 08's i forget) i heard they were fool proof solid markers that do the job.

hey welcome to the sport mate :) you obviously enjoyed it, so its great you want to keep it going!

well first thing i would have a look at is the style of paintball you want to play. if your wanting to stick to playing in woodsball (assuming this is your experience so far) on the weekends at a rental site, then you can start ruling out fast firing tournament style markers, since to be quite honest you'll never use the speed they get to. so have a look at guns from smart parts, BT or tippmann, which all do decent guns which dont break the bank and have good technology for this style of play.

Alternatively, if its tournament paintball your looking to get into, then i would first make sure you have the facilities for it i.e. a local team, field to train at etc. like the post above second hand market is the place to be when looking for a tourney gun on a budget. in which case companies like proto, Invert or even still smart parts will be able to provide a budget gun that has everything you need.

firstly before you think about getting a gun, i cant emphasise enough how important it is to make sure you have the other necessary equipment first. A mask which you can see clearly out of and is comfortable on you will do more good, as well as having good playing gear with plenty of knee protection. on top of this having a comfortable reliable pack which isnt going to flap around while you run and can hold onto your pods is a good investment, and also having a good electronic loader. after all, top end guns cant be very top end without a good loader on top :)

hope this gives you some starting points and best of luck for the future mate, and have fun!

Hi thanks :D

Wow, lots of info there! Whats tournament ball? Is it with the inflatable stuff?? :) How do I know what mask will be comfortable on me?

How much would all this cost? I think I found a gun I like, its a Proto Matrix Rail in CAMO!!!, think its about 160 (which is a lot :( ) would it be ok for using in the woods too?
I know i'd need an air bottle...which can be expensive :(

I could maybe escape a pack and use the sites?? Is knee protection important then?

Are there any teams or places around cambridge or bedford? I know theres a couple of wood sites.

Thanks for your help!!

yep you got it tournament paintball is playing on the small fields with inflatable bunkers, really fast paced :)

unfortunately the only way to really know if a mask is comfortable is to try it on. although i can personally say from experience that more expensive masks have obviously had more money put into the development of it, plus they use higher quality foam and stuff so generally, the upper end masks are quite good for comfort. double check with where your buying to make sure they'll take it back if your not happy with your purchase, which most are :)

okay the important bit, cost :p . again it just depends on your budget, but honestly, if you spend maybe about £40-50 on a pair of paintball trousers, you shouldnt go wrong. yeah you can use a rental pack if you want but its all perrsonal choice, really any pack which you buy at the correct size will do the job :) so doesnt need to be really expensive

yes yes yes knee protection is important :D especially when playing in woods, lots of things for you to hurt yourself on. just the other day a mate of mine fell hitting his knee off some rocks, if it wasnt for the kneepads on his playing trousers, he would probably have broken his kneecap or something.

great choice on the PMR! its a solid gun so i've heard, got all the standard feautres you would expect from a gun in that price range :). just remember you'll also need a loader for your gun. cant recommend the INVERT HALO TOO enough, for the price its a fantastic wee loader. yep it will be great in the woods, after all, this style gun is nice and light, so you have advantage over people carrying awkward big guns :D

all in i would probably budget around £170 for a suitable set of trousers, pack, loader and mask, maybe even a sneaky jersey if you get some bargains :D sadly its an expensive sport to play, but i think you'll agree worth it haha.

sorry cant be much help on teams, i'm from scotland, but if you have a look there is a comprehensive teams list thread in this website. maybe some of the guys on here will point you in the right direction too.

Hope all this helps mate, any more questions gimme a shout! ;)

Some useful videos from techpb:

watch out about tanks, since alot of rental places in the uk dont allow your own tank.

EDIT: should also say i'm giving the impression you need to get EVERYTHING, which absolutely isnt the case. buid up gradual, like maybe play for a while with your own mask and gear before buying your gun? heck, i still sometimes play with rental guns while using my own loader mask gear etc sometimes. me and some guys with guns worth £1000+ are going to be playing with rental guns together in a few weeks !!! :D

Wow thank you so much for your help!!

I have done some researching on masks and E-vents seem to be very popular but seems to be a few types around.

Fair enough on the teams, didn't see your from scotland :p

I jsut watched loads of that guys videos and in one he said about tournament paintball costing loads of money (over $700) not sure I can afford to do that! Is it really the case?

But he seems to say gear before gun (like loads of others), but don't i need my own gun? Or what can I use? I could use the rental air and packs and everything?

Would I be able to fit a bottle into that £170 and maybe knock it down to £150 if I don't get a jersey or a pack?

It seems to be a very expensive sport to get involved in!

I might be able to stretch to 300 for everything, but that would be the max.

Would a 3 ltr 300 Bar bottle charge one of these? I have one from air rifle shooting :)

Would it be possible to get just the mask and gun and use the sites hopper and tank? would they allow this?

Thanks again, you have been amazingly helpful!!

yep the e-vents mask is a good mask and if you can afford that, it should do you well.

Hm tournament paintball can be both expensive and cheap. for example the UK masters is a big competitive tournament, and its £225 for a 5 man team to enter, so £45 to yourself :) then if paint is ranging from about £30 a case (2000 rounds), its not going to be that bad. got to remember when mike talks about tournament paintball, he's meaning huge leagues like PSP world cup, but personally i wouldnt be spending $700 on one tournament.

yep your right you could use rental gear, and its completely your personal preference. i can honestly say there are some REALLY bad rental markers out there so a gun could improve your game quite a bit. i would definately try and go for at least a decent mask (cant shoot what you cant see) and a pair of good quality trousers to start with, and add your gun onto that.

yeah a tank is quite affordable, but again i'd just double check with where your playing to make sure you can use it. the variety of tank prices is huge, from £40 for a 3000psi steel tank to £150 for a 4500psi carbon fibre tank. if going for a tank, especially on a budget, i can strongly recommend going for something like a 0.8L 3000 psi tank, as you can pick these up really cheap. i'm hopefully buying one off a guy at the weekend for £20 :D

i honestly dont have a clue if your air rifle tank will do it, as the regulator on the tank might not be suitable. i'd try asking on here if theres anyone tried using the same kind of tanks.

lastly on using their hopper and tank that should be perfectly acceptable (remember you cant use co2), as i said earlier the only thing they sometimes wont allow is your own tank. as you will know the PMR uses eyes to detect if a ball is in your gun, so using a rental hopper wont cause you any problems for breaking paint.

so i can only say go spend your £300 wisely, but that should definately cover the essentials. best of luck with your shopping :D let me know how it goes.

Hi
If you can get to Milton keynes there is a woods ball site call Sabotage, there are players there that would be able to help you out and even loan you a marker so you try before you buy.
There is even an on site shop that sell most paintball items and a on site dye/proto tech to aid with any questions or issues you have.

Ok I have a Gun (PMR), Air Bottle(1.1ltr 4500 psi), Chest Protector(Proto) and hopefully a Jersey(Green lol). Speant 225 so under the limit so far and leaves me a bit for a mask and loader. I might leave the loader for now, beg, borrow etc :p for one to use!

And a mask should be ok to find, lots around!! Either E-vents or Grillz I have heard good things about!

And pants, if some come along cheap in my size i will have a look (everyone seems to be fairly large!)

Tournament sounds better now its not so expensive :)

Foot: I could probably get to milton keynes, how much would it cost me to come down (entry/paint etc), would people be able to set my gun up for me? :) and when is a good day?

Thanks all :)
