the thing that gets me - i currently have a 3.06ghz processor, ( it a few years old) but the new ones only seem to be 4ghz tops?
Yeah...but now we are talking about 2-4 processors in one with architecture that pisses over older ones from heights one can only imagine.

Its like the difference between a 2.5L Mondeo and a 2.5l Skyline engine, only the Skyline has 4 engines and throttle bodies as well as quad turbos and Nitrous.

well i currently use a 22 inch Lg monitor, and would like high frame rates.

Budget -

not sure to be honest (not kept my eye on current prices)
i'd like the following spec at least

* AMD Athlon 64×2 4400+ or any Intel Core 2 Duo
* 3+ GB RAM (XP and Vista)
* A 256MB Video Card (Shader Model 3) - NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT / ATI X1900, or equivalent
so maybe a rough price for that?

and then a better spec price?

Ok ill make it short and to the point.

If you want whats gonna last you longest look at I7 proccessors.

Next decide, vista or XP. If you go XP then I suggest an I7 with 3gb of ram. (xp 64 bit isnt worth the effort).

If your going Vista then either 32 bit, again an I7 with 3gb of ram, or if your going 64 bit consider 6gb.

The 7800 is pretty old now, consider a 9800.

The biggest chip AMD do at the moment is the Phenom 2 940, thats a 3 ghz quad core, and it's only £190 ish quid worth it's money imo ;)

I think Intel do bigger chips (3.2ghz), but you'll pay through the roof for them and tbh it's not worth the extra £800

You can get the AMD 6000 + 3ghz dual core for about £70 quid ish now, brilliant chip, I paid £140 for mine when it came out

but like said in previous post's, depends entirely on your budget :)

Well.

Your 3.06Ghz processor is one engine.

So say it is like a 3.0L engine from a 40 year old car.
Now imagine how much better a 3.0l engine is, from a modern car...miles better performance...now imagine, that the car actually has 2 or 4 engines like that, all working together...which makes the performance unbelievably better than the 40 year old car...beyond comprehension.

How long does it take your PC to load XP?

Mine is pretty average now, but with 2gig of ram....from pushing the button, I can be on my fully functioning Vista Aero desktop in about 12 seconds.

XP pro X64 bit fails!, it fails badly. MS have even stopped supporting it now, they've not brought a third service pack out for it like they have for the 32 bit version.

Vista's getting a second service pack which is due shortly, it's basically a performance pack to make faster, the beta's out now I believe :)
