surely the temperature isn't high enough to damage aluminium and with natural cooling there should be any stress varaince due to one bit cooling dramatically faster than the other, I'm no metallurgist but just seems to be common sense...
only if when you took it out of the oven the drop it metal would be softer. but like you said cant see it being hot enough to damage. but who really knows ? bit of research in order
Just had to take mine out of the oven, did every it said and it started to smoke pretty bad..more of a smell though. Dont think im going to try that again, it cant be good for you.

could be lacquer burning off, maybe of you could get hold of one of those little tabletop electric oven jobs (baby belling???) then you do it outside...
