Some refs may react over zealous because they were threated this way (1st + 2nd event especially) before or being told to behave like this...?

Of course, there is no time to explain players why they (eventually) are out, because the refs need to focus on the rest of the game (and if they don´t do that, it usually causes much more trouble!).

In the 1st and 2nd MS leg it seemed to be a little bit harsh being "shouted out of your bunker" but in belgium and paris most of them reactet (imo) the right way and told you shortly for example, that you have a hit on the pack or whatever if they had the time (tellin you shortly, not explaining anything!).

I really think that helps players a lot to understand what the refs do and they should still react like this. Even makes yourself more feel being threated nice and not thinking the refs are just waiting to throw you outta game :)

Cheers,
Lex

This was my third event of the season, and my first at M5. My experience at this event would lead me to believe that the MS organisers consider the M5 teams as the least important of all those participating. I say this for a number of reasons:

Firstly - the scheduling. First game Sat morning 8.15, last game on Saturday (no 6 for the day) around 6.00pm, with the 5th game played at around noon. So 6 hours to wait between 5th and 6th games.
On Sunday, there was also over 2 hours I think between game 1 and game 2.
We were told that because so many teams had entered M5, the scheduling could not be arranged any better. That's poor.

Secondly -Fields - We only played on 2 fields Eclipse and Dye. The Eclipse field was on grass, and very uneven grass at that. Not what we expected at all, and not satisfactory really.
I assume that the Eclipse field was put on because of the extra (too many) teams in M5, hence the lack of turf. But I might be wrong.

Thirdly - marshalling. The marshalls were ok generally, but we saw several examples of either ineffectiveness, disinterest (really obvious disinterest. In fact it reminded me of Dynasty's marshalling performance some years ago at Amsterdam!!), or rudeness interms of how they treated players.

Finally, not ONCE was my ID checked, and I had just paid to get a new card (from Div 2 to M5).

Other issues
The cost of food at the event I felt was overpriced for what we got. For example €7 for a chip with kebab. Also the location of the food was very far from the players' area.

Toilet facilities - There were plenty of loos, but none I used had a facility to wash hands!

Some Pluses -
Staging area close to fields, air and paint
Overall location of event on Disney's doorstep - fantastic
Matt Green's commentating on CPL - funny as ever.

In broad terms, I get a sense that value for money is no longer there for teams in the MS, and perhaps that's a trade-off for some of the locations we now get to use, e.g. Disneyland Car park and the Nurburgring.
Also, the clear emphasis on the CPL and SPL, whilst understandable at one (strategic) level, really deprives the lower level teams of a sense of belonging or of being part of the event, and I find that unfortunate.

I really do appreciate that these series take a lot of organising and a lot of money to run, and again I was told that the series does not make money. One only has to look at the netting systems, amount of turf, no. of fields etc, to appreciate that this is now a massive operation. And perhaps it's the sheer scale and size of the events that leads to less atmosphere as has been pointed out.

In spite of all the above, I enjoyed the event, as I always do. However, that was largely due to the company of team mates and the opportunity to meet old friends.

paris event review

Other than having a marker stolen, I still remain positive about the event.

Overall feel of the event - I was satisfied with the reffing any calls if not explained at the time were explained by the ultimate.

the fields were good, a shame not all of them were on artificial turf. however the field boundries (sp?) could have been made more clear and kept obvious. (a yellow spray painted line after a days play nevermind 3 in clear sunshine and with lots of bright paintballs is not very clear and many were caught out because of it! - Clear boundries need to be maintained)

I thought the atmosphere at the event was really good, the whole layout seemed ok everything was reasonably close without being cramped.

there is always room for improvement (the scheduling of a solitary game in the evening is not very sensible for instance) and too concur with doug above it is a shame the series pays so much attention to the CPL/SPL. This may be considered the 'pinnacle' of euro ball by some but with the M5 counting for the best part of 50,000 euro revenue in entry fees and probably the biggest argument of at least 400 paying consumers turning up at your event it is a shame more attention isnt payed to the M5

We played 7!!! out of 10 games on the eclipse field.
1 @ dye, which was fine
1 @ Chronic, refs robbed us with a 1-4-1. Checked my player after and he had NO! hits. That was total BS
1 @ Tomahawk, which was also fine

The only time they checked my ID was when I had to get the armband. Other than that nobody checked my ID. Might as well play for another team :S

One thing, why are you complaining about getting a 1-4-1 for a pack hit? they are they rules!

If you have a hit on you and are still playing, it's a 1-4-1, no ifs and buts. As long as you are in the game, you are affecting the game whether you know about it or not.

The less grey area there is the better the reffing becomes. If you're hit, and you play, it's a 1-4-1. That's not bad reffing.
Its just a bad rule!!

Its for no brain robotic refs. If they can only get half-wits to ref then fair enough, but I'd hope they could get some guys with a little nous couldnt they?

[Seperate topic already covered - but you started it Beaks!!]

lol - no problem mate.

I think it's a good rule, myself. Honestly. Any rule has an element of decision to it, but I think it's better to err of the side of heavier reffing than loose reffing.

There :p

Anyway, you're just crabby because you haven't had enough sleep ;)

Overall i liked the event.

As for the main thing about reffing.

overall it was, not that great.

but in all fairness, this was to all teams.

Examples of what i saw, Reffs standing behind players, shouting "out" and if the player did not react to this instantly, 1-4-1 were pulled, now i may be off on this one, but sometimes its hard to hear someone who is 10 meters behind you, when your shooting.

Also saw a few players who should apparently have stopped mid-air to avoid a 1-4-1, so word of caution, do NOT try to dive into the snake, if your hit on the way there even in the air, you WILL get a penalty for it.

Field borders, now some may argue players should get shorter, but sliding to some corner bunkers on the SPL and CPL field got a lot of people eliminated because, they were too long to fit on the field, and thus had a foot over the edge of the border if sliding sideways, and got called out on this. (ofc people should get eliminated if they are out of bounds, but this was just silly, and it seemed like some reffs were waiting for people to do just this, and call them out on it)

The food, i cant really fault, i expected it to cost me more then the rest of the event(which it did, im a fat ******* so sue me ;))

The turf, was just.. well, the looks on those who tried to slide sometimes just said it all, sliding sliding.. stopping dead 2 ft from the bunker..all wrapped up in turf. priceless and not in that good way.

Overall, even with the above rant, i would say it was an OK event.
