I know this is slightly off the point, but with Mark saying a "show" should be put on again, it kinda just popped into my head.
The Millennium don't spend enough time or money on making the CPL/SPL fields decent. Simple things sometimes (not always) go a miss...technical difficulties with the scoreboard mean spectators can lose track of points. Problems with netting in front of the spectator area, etc.
How about a big screen for quick action-replay's between points?
More advertising to increase spectators (rather than player-spectators) is also likely to heighten the atmosphere. This would also mean the locations would have to be easily accessible not just by those competing, but by the general public and players coming to watch. Who really wants to travel into Crystal Palace or out to the Nuremburgring if they only have a passing interest?
Disneyland Paris is a great location (although perhaps the average age of the public is a little too young ) ...but there's very little advertisement, you follow little laminated bits of paper to the event. Why not have banners and posters up?
If non-player attendance does increase, why not set up a small sup'air field for a "give it a go" kinda thing?
Finally, increase the prizes...if more was spent on advertising/marketing, more people would come, the big sponsors may see it as beneficial to invest more, allowing the value of cash prizes to increase. In turn this would act as an incentive for more teams to compete...
Kinda went on a bit - and all points may not be feasable or maybe not even relavant...
But hey
