I think people get tattoos for one of three reasons:
- commemorative/memorials: this would be the type that reminds you of a special date (like 9/11) or a person (mom, dad) that is special to you.
- personal philosophy/concept: symbols, images and words that have some meaning to the wearer, such as yin/yang symbols, crosses, or sayings and quotes that you feel represent you
- fashion/body art: this would be anything that's done simply for looks or because it's the "in" thing to do. Examples would be the barbed wire and celtic armband crazes from a few years ago, or the lower back tattoo. these are the people who usually go to a dermatologist to have them removed a few years later.
If you're going to get a tattoo, I'd stick with the commemorative or personal type. Ultimately, it's something you have to live with for a long time so it better have some meaning to you.
And what someone said before about don't choose something off the wall or from the flash book is very true. If you can't think of what you want, keep looking around to get some ideas. Just slapping some ink on yourself to have it is short-sighted and you will someday regret it (was going to say it's stupid but I know some intelligent people who've got really bad tats).
I have two tattoos. So does my wife. We both spent time designing our tats, or choosing the images and themes that we wanted to go into it. I think that makes them more special to me. I'm remind me of the concepts and ideas I designed into my tats every time I look at them, which helps put my life into perspective.
