I made one today using a round plastic sledge (£14)
a webbing belt from primark (£1) for the straps
a set of £1.49 nuts & bolts from wilko's

I have a large sheet of clear perspex at home...but hey I didn't have it here.

Clear would be ideal, and thick enough not to crack if you drop/throw it.

Shields are a waste of time.

Wear body armour, all your pads and a hoody + a hand towel wrapped around your neck and you're golden - plus you don't sacrifice mobility or vision and are not tempted to huddle behind your shield instead of watching your zone.

Tournament Refs that use shields are not good refs imo.

Ner ner ner nerr :p.
I only bought this one for the big game because it's different when you have to run through a couple of dozen lanes instead of just five at most.
And I had to use it because I asked my dad to make me one & he comes up with this cupboard door thing with straps on...well it worked, and I didn't want to hurt his feelings :).

I think that's a bit of an exaggeration; I've decided not to use them any more because it stopped me making clear hand signals (I had to throw it down, I didn't not do the signals), but I wouldn't say I was a bad ref when I used a shield?
Lying on the ground/sliding under lanes is easier.

well ill be bringin my shield this weekend, and that quote is BS "Tournament Refs that use shields are not good refs imo."

- the amount of players that THANKED me when pulling them out at the 7man, using the shield to protect the backs of them, was in around a dozen. 'specially with a ramping tournie. i found hand signals awkward at first, but i got the hang of them after the 1st game

come on, first of all, stick with the funny sledge if you need one, but once you get hit once, the pain goes away, lay on your stomach if your that bothered, martial pads are only a tenner,

(shivers from the idea of a sledge, my gf broke her back laast year sledging, and i got hypothermia, but we both been out training on sunday and tournamenting on wed nights!!) :p :p
