All the stuff deleted by hijackthis, is backed up by default in hjt options and can be restored easily.
Registry backups in regedit can be made easily as well by clicking the folder(key) or the dword/string/etc then click file-export.

regedit can lead to bad news, for example. Don't delete:
My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft :D

I was only 12 when that happened, and XP fully crashed and nothing worked. Needed to reinstall XP and lost all my files.

The main problem wasn't a virus, unless you class everything by microsoft, a virus :D
I just saw stuff in his log files that appeared to be a virus.
