not trying to start an argument here but hip hop is the more recent of the 2 break dance and electro was all big around 88 through 93 which is the time that the tunes you talk of came out and about.... :) also you will find that most of the samples you hear now in dance music came from the old skool electro and original house tracks

Oh dear. You ever hear of James Brown or Kraftwerk?

I remember when it was all called rap! So there :p. I'm even old enough to have seen Africa Bambaata & the Soul Sonic Force live .

Anyway - let's not forget THE classic hip-hop/hip-house/electro/techno/whatever anthem - MC Mikey & DJ Sven's "Holiday Rap" or anything by Sid Snot or Roland Rat!

Break dancing was big waaaaaay before 88. It was dead by 88. Luckily, we're seeing a revival again.

Anyway, just to make things a little clearer for some people who don't seem to know, HipHop is not an evolution of break dance/electro music. HipHop is a lifestyle, which found its origins in the four basic elements, namely Rapping, DJ-ing (nowadays often called turntablism, as there are a goog number of no skill having people calling themselves DJ, yeah, I'm talking about you Tiesto), Breaking and Graffiti. Simply put, rapping is something you do, HipHop is something you live.

I could take that bet - as could DW. Just because it was 'underground' in the early days - doesn't mean it didn't reach UK shores.

I guess it depends how old you are Jay. I'm 40 this year .

It's got nothing to do with age (although one could indeed be too young) in this case. It is possible to have been listening as long as I have, just not longer. Nope, can't be done. As before I started listening, it didn't exist...

Oh, and haha! You're old...;)
