Recognition as a 'sport'

Russell Smith

The Paintball Association
Please explain... why is the UKPSF not suitable to apply?
The UKPSF is a trade body, and as such looks after the interest of the general trade sites, shops and manufactures by helping them keep within the law.
It also liaises with the government with the legal aspects of paintball.
Because it is a trade body it is not allowed to represent paintball the sport.
Steve Bull is one of the most stand up guys in paintball and I hope he would want to come on board in some capacity if and when it happens.

what would happen if we were to become a sport?

Paul, it is quite possible nothing would happen and it would certainly be that short term, it is also possible that paintball becomes very cheap/free for some divisions with prize money for the winners.
I would be happy if it is somewhere in-between with some cash available to promote paintball to the masses.

Didn't this happen with horse riding? AFAIK they had different names for different areas of their sport - eg. racing, show jumping, trials, trotting, dressage etc. All different sports in their own rights.
Not quite like that with equestrian sports Raffles. There are 2 main bodies that cover just about the whole lot - the British Horseracing Board which covers racing type events, and the British Horse Society which covers eventing, dressage, showjumping, polo, mounted games.......... Then there are committees and organisations under each of these 2 main bodies such as the BSJA which regulates showjumping.

I think also that most of the "traditional" sports were recognised long before the Sports council came up with the latest "qualifications" for recognition, so don't need to be run in the same way as the newer sports.
