I'm looking for peoples views on 1 UK paintball league.
PA, Masters, NSPL combined.
Played all around the uk
Divisions similar to the millenniums
What id like to be discussed is if you think it could work, pro's and con's on such idea and if you actually think it would help or hinder UK ball
I don't think a combined league like your suggesting would work. You are advocating multi day events that tour the UK in the same way the Millenium tours Europe. From a practical point of view not enough teams would have the resources to meet the higher costs this would entail. That's already been discussed.
There is an alternative though. If we accept that only a minority of teams can afford to travel to play we should reduce the number that need to. Let's reduce it to the teams competing at the top end of the spectrum and for simplicity call that the National League. We then have Regional Leagues below that for newer teams, displaced rec ball player teams etc to compete in. And below that we have the Rookie Events etc.
The unification aspect would come from the organisers all agreeing a format for each level of play, Local, Regional and National, and encouraging teams to take part at the appropriate level. All three levels do not have to be the same format but the local and regional formats should be consistent across the country. Winners of Regional League could compete for places in the National League and losers of the National League compete not to be demoted out to their Regional League. If series prizes from the Regional Leagues included a seasons entry to the National league that should help teams transition with regards to cost of now having further to travel, higher level of training needed etc . Industry sponsors could aim their sponsorship at the National League teams creating more competion to qualify for it and therefore driving standards up and helping those teams with the higher costs.
The benefit for the organisers for signing on as a recognised event would come from being able to put their marketing budgets towards promoting a unified series of events rather than just their own. i.e they benefit form other events marketing the series. They could also benefit from combined purchasing power and sharing reffs etc. This is a route the Millenium organisers are already travelling as an example.
An obvious issue of contention at the moment is the thought that the National Serieswould be competing for the same teams playing the Regional Leagues so it becomes an issue of money and profits. The best solution I can see is an agreed cap on the number of teams in the National Series. As UK Paintball grows hopefully this could increase by agreement. As an example Russ has already stated the PA does not need lots of teams to follow through on their ideas of running a league meeting Sport Council guidelines. If this capping system was agreed it should show the National league is not there to take profits away and should give Regional organisers the confidence to move forward with the idea.
We already have a lot of events in place that would slip into this model and would just require binding together under a single banner. Obviously it would take vision for the existing organisers to sign on to the concept and see it will benefit them all in the long run. I could write in more detail but this is more a thoughts thread than detailed propsal thread so I'll stop now.
