Although i would agree that some of the marches where PR stunts to gain a swift conclusion, there where military reasons behind them as well. The main ones being that the supply chain was become increasingly hard to maintain as the nearest air head being used was the Ascension isles and also the fear that the Argentineans would be able to purchase more Exocet missile.

Back on track though would National service really work as the Army now is having problems with some of their recruits.

Sorry, but that makes no sense. When your lines of communications are over extended, you consolidate. The last thing you do is do another speed march, making said lines even longer.
Speak to anybody that had any form of command in that war, and there will be much gnashing of teeth at that decision. That Exocet spiel is just a party line. Fact is that the French would not have sold more missiles to Argentine at that point and even if they did, do you have any idea how long the red tape and transport for such a transaction takes?

Given the demands set out by a militarily incompetent government, the British Royal Marines, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force handled themselves brilliantly. The fact the commanding officer of the battalion making the assault was himself killed during the attack, demonstrates a lead by example mentality, which is magnificent. Any officer that is not willing to take the same risks as the men he commands, should be booted out of the armed forces.

Anyway, we are waaaaaaaaaay off track here. Sorry.

iam sorry but national serivice is not needed

our armed forces should be for our nations protection from its neighbours and for that we have plenty (i know they are all friendly but thats now not in the future )

the reason they have recruitment problems is the same reason my brother and at least 10 others from the same squadron all just left he RAF

they where told they would be spending at least 6 months this year in afganistan and no one wants to go

all of our troops should be pulled back to the uk and leave the rest of the world to its own devices or let others deal with things for once sick of millions and millions being wasted in fighting wars while people here live on the streets and our hospitals and schools crumble

we are not a empire anymore just tiny little island in the north sea

Good grief, so many of you complain about the current school system, I can see why. Many of you are totally ignorant when it comes to history.

So, let's get some facts straight. Yes, the British Empire used to be an empire on which the sun never set, but that's only because God does not trust you in the dark.
Seriously, the reason your empire crumbled is not because of some money hungry politician. If anything, they lost a lot of money. The fact is that imperialism at some point became quite passé, mostly because the people being ruled from afar kinda figured out that there were a lot more of them than there were of the people ruling them. You didn't grant independance to most of these countries from the kindness of your sould, rather you got kicked out, just as the Dutch were kicked out of Indonesia.

As far as Thatcher doing a good job of her one war, guess again. She didn't. Government meddling with the way the war should be handled resulted in a far higher casualty rate than what it would have been if the campaign had been run by military logics. Thatcher and co wanted some quick results, which resulted in a number of forced marches and a badly prepared assault. Only the discipline and training of your Royal Marines meant that they were able to win the day, despite some heavy casualties.
Had that maneuvre been conducted on a strictly military basis, the Falklands war would have lasted a few weeks longer, but many British lives would have been saved.

As far as bringing back heavier punishments doing the trick in reducing crime, get real. Look at the US, look at Russia. Both countries that have very severe penalties for pretty much every crime, but it's done them very little good.
A good start would be to actually enforce the rules that they laid down for society, kinda like paintball really. (look how I brought the thread somewhat back on track)

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming.

@ Coldy: Thanks.
Buddah, will you do my modern history essay homework for me? :D

Why join the military if you are combat shy or are selective about where you do combat? It's like leaving the fire brigade if you don't wanna fight certain fires or there are too many fires to put out in areas you'd rather see burn..

You harp on about "wasting" resources on foreign wars, but we undoubtedly waste millions on training that isn't used too, thanks to people like your bro and his colleagues. Get real.

No money was wasted on training his time was up he had the choice to leave

but if you look at recuitment levels the army is short 15k atm it used to be atractive to people from run down areas but now you join up and do 2-3 tours in hostile nations

in the past you would have had a year in germany the family could live with you maybe a few months in the falklands /hong kong ect

but now if you have a family you spend 6-8 months a year away from them for no reason than to massage some politicians ego
