Can't shoot straight.

Hi,

Well basically my ION doesn't shoot straight. By that, I mean it isn't consistant.

Last time I was playing, I was trying to do some pretty long shots. However, sometimes the balls would go for miles, and sometimes they wouldn't do much at all. They were also all over the place in terms of going left and right.

My barrel was clean and I was firing slowly so it wasn't drop off.

I had old lube on the bolt and I was using cheapish paint. (Procaps, but I'll get back to that later.) My detents are also a bit worn.

I have an after market barrel (Freak with a .689 insert.) and I have an aftermarket bolt (Firebolt.).

I am using the stock dwell from a T-Board and I'm running at just over 180PSI. I still need to set this up but I'm going to wait till my QEV gets back from a return before I bother to set that up.

Now I initially thought that it was because I am using cheap paint, however I've seen a friend's Angel A1 firing cheap paint VERY consistantly. He wasn't firing as far and he was firing inside his garage however so there wasn't any wind.
I've also seen many videos of people hitting targets very easily from reasonable distances while using cheap paint. They wouldn't be able to do this with an inconsistent marker so that also shows me that it's my marker's fault and not the paint.

I've since lubed my bolt with Dye Slick Lube and the bolt moves A LOT more easily, I'm also going to clean and lube my reg today once I get a 9/16" deep wall socket, as that has never been done. I havn't yet tried firing it after I lubed the bolt, however.

So what is the source of my inconsistency ? What can I do to make it better ? I know that I've listed a few things that are wrong with my ION here, but I'm unsure which are causing the problems and I might have overlooked something.

Cheers,
-Andrew.

The paint to barrel bore match is fine. A little tighter than I'd like but I only have one insert. It isn't loose anyway so it should be fine ?

The weather was fine on the day - Wasn't very windy or anything.

People were shooting straighter with a flatline that I could. :c

Cheers.

The flatline puts backspin on the ball so has a very flat shot, normal barrels always dip. If the paint is too big for the insert then theres your problem, get a 0.693 (gold) insert and you'll be sorted i think.

Well it wasn't just dipping, it was that the balls were inconsistent in trajectory. (spelt ?)

I'll get an insert kit ASAP then, cheers for your help. :)

Staying warm on a sunday!
also id like to point out that your input pressure is a little high

my ion runs at roughly 110 input, when was the last time you chronographed the gun

i have a standard board, and qev thats the only internal mod i have and have a stock reg.

like bob said get a full insert kit for your freak as having just one insert defeats the point of the freak system

also look at adjusting your dwell settings to a lower number as your firebolt is a lot lighter than the stock

it will take a few pods of paint to set up perfectly with a good consistency

hope this helps

Yes I'm going to get an insert kit now, if Lump still has it.

I didn't initially get the inserts because I didn't have the money.

I'm running the stock dwell currently so yes it is a bit high, but the gun is chrono'd right.

I have a replacement QEV on the way, and once I get that I'll set it up better - Then later on I will buy a chrono and do it properly. (Easier to use my own than use my local site's chrono.)

Will lowering the input pressure get a better consistency ?

Cheers mate.

I think the first thing to do is get the marker over a chronograph and get some actual numbers re consistency and velocity. The ickle hand-held jobs work fine for that purpose and aren't too expensive. Once you know how consistent the marker actually is you can start working on ways to tighten things up.
