I think that what Mike is saying is that cost isn't the main factor, it's the fact that new players take a hammering and dont want to come back, regardless of whether they have a marker of the same quality as the opposition.

In regards to cost - there are cheaper markers & equipment available which can do pretty much the same thing, big picture, the differences are marginal, but as we participate regularly in the sport, most players like to have as many minor advantages as possible when stepping onto the field - which pushes the cost up.

Totally agree... people at my walkon ramp up to like 20bps and it just ruins the game for everyone else. I think the limit should be like 11bps max for woodsball.

I don't see it. Any player that's been in the sport a couple of months can hit 10.5 consistently with even a basic electro marker surely?
Any type of paintball incorporates taking territory and denying territory and shooting lanes is part of that. Ramp, capped at 10.5 seems perfectly reasonable to me. I would use far more paint on uncapped semi.
In scenario alot of people choose to cap at 12+ in my experience and you generally see more of a lesser quality of paint. Also you see far more new players coming in through scenario than you do tournament. So now you have No Cap restriction + Generally harder paint + New players....?
I have heard it said that there is no point in enforcing a cap because it's down to the player behind the trigger so it makes no difference. However I have been overshot FAR less since I have been playing tourney ball than I was in scenario and if that guy running at 12+ bps is prepared to overshoot me I would far rather him be at 10.5 bps.
Did it contribute to the decline of paintball? Well I use less paint with ramping capped at 10.5...
I'd also add that we play a game where the objective is to hit the opposition with a round ball of paint which means occasionally you might be, so don't cry about it when you are!

oh dear ramping,, here we go,,,

as i under stand it,, nearly all games,,and walkons now have a cap rate on ramping or rate of fire any way,,,in fact some walk on sites have banned ramping full stop..

a lot of the games i have been to have caps of about 12 to 14 bps,,,

now im gonna throw a spanner in the works,, side ways thinking ect ect,,

i dont use ramping nor do i use semi,,, i use auto reponse,,with a cap of around 10 to 12 bps,,,

now moving on,,, as i understand it,,sup air in the uk is now also capped is this right,,

so if the above is true,,,, how is this applying to us,,,

if you over shoot you over shoot,, it dont matter what your rate is or fire mode,,
or type of sport or game you are playing,,,

we play paintball,,,its a contact sport,,we are at the end of the day shooting at each other,,
but its not the over shooting that is the problems is it,, its the temper losing that is the problem,,,

and its easly to lose your temper when you had 10 pints the night before,, no kip and then just had 2 cans of redbull,,, see what i mean,,,

but its not just our sport,, i come from a motocross back ground,, oh and you should see the kick offs they have there,,,

its the best part of the day,,,

i can shoot just as quick with semi as i can with ramping,,,

so i dont know what the answer is,,, we could go back to single triggers,

VERY TRUE!

everyone i tell that i play paintball the first thing they say is "ooooh thats expensive!"
there is no other possible way of doing this though since paintball sites need to pay for: staff, equipment, insurance, facilities, electricity etc etc etc.

the list is endless and the extra you pay for paint at a punter site pays for everything. after all its hardly practical to start breaking down the price of everything to a normal customer but tell them they have to pay for it all anyway.
