Ok my examples weren't great but i think we have different ideas on multiculturalism and what its defined as obviously. Theres a difference between assimilation as you suggest and what i would define as multiculturalism. I don't think people need to adopt the practices of other cultures (which i think is what you mean but correct me if im wrong) just that you can be accepting and respectful of it. Which is what i would define as having a multicultural society, its a wooly subject but i don't believe Dave has done much to help anything by adamantly saying it hasn't worked, i mean what is he going to do to improve the situation?
i know what lack of ethnic diversity is like im from lincolnshire which is 98% white and i go to Leeds Uni where there is a massive asian and afro-carribean community and know where i would rather be.

What we witnessed was a very shrewd move from the palace and the timing was perfect..

Our country is in a rough economical climate, Racist fears are at a paranoid level and the entire popultion is low, so the old "Q" threw a party the world over would have been proud of.. Our nations leaders can't win a war properly, our Bankers can't deal money properly and you're pretty sure to Hell we won't Olympic like the chinese... Even Beckham couldn't bring in the world cup..

But my God did the royals get it right!!! They did what they've been doing for generations and the bottom line is, they gave us all a spectacle the country could be proud of!! Even if our own population couldn't appreciate it, it showed the world that in these dark times The British can still keep their stiff upper lip!!!

As for our multi-cultural society.. Well What I saw built bridges like golden gate!!! Folks from the same street hadn't spoken in years, yet got together celebrating!! In fact I reckon it was a new statement in Nationalism... As in.. If you're not from our country but were here celebrating when the future King and Queen of Great Britain were married, then you're o.k. and accepted in our eyes!!

Did you not see the footage of Birmingham and Bradford.. Made me Proud!! I know London never likes to admit there's more to our country than the capital... But there is!!! I've been to Newcastle!!!!

Sab, there is no way in this world that multiculturalism is ever gonna be defined by 'one culture accepting and being respectful of another' ... this isn't multiculturalism Sab, it's just a social nicety, nothing more; you have just described cultural accommodation.

There has to be some element of social integration before you can even think of describing anything as multicultural and your understanding has no such element.

I'm afraid if you hold your understanding of multiculturalism to be nothing more than acceptance and respect then we don't really have much more to say because to debate anything correctly, you need to be talking about the same thing ..... and trust me, we ain't mate.
Social integration is an integral part of MC and if you are telling me our country is socially integrated then whatever you are taking, please send me some .. :)

do not always agree with Robbo but on this he is correct:eek:
i am in a unique position to say this as the street i live on is what everybody would see as being multicultural in this country
white british families 15+
asian 6+
eastern european 3+
other ethnic groups 5+
nobody talks to each other unless it,s from their ethnic group
the streets after are all asian ,now when you walk up the main road through the community they talk english till you are very close then change to their own language i find this disrespectful
but as they say birds of a feather flock together:)
people are just the same

If that is true, then its not all gone to waste. Not everyone is into this Monarchy stuff, but if its like an investment, then all is good. I have probably paid more tax over the years than most here, and no, its not bragging rights here, i would better seen the revenue go help families, hospitals etc
Just some facts on how much the Royal family costs the tax payer for info here.

£40 million is the rough cost in total for everything the Royal family costs. Estates, personal protection etc. That's about 65p per man woman and child in the country.

What is little reported is how much the Royal family put into the taxpayers funds. Since George the confesser (I believe), the royal family has voluntarily given up all profits from its lands to the government. They don't have to do this. They own the land. If they wanted they could keep it for themselves. However every monarch since him has voluntarily given up the profits from the land and the deal is the goverment pays for them. This includes entrance fee's, things bought in shops etc. The rough figure in income per year is £200 million pounds. Essentially the Government makes £160 million profit every year from the royal family which is essentially a £2.50 tax rebate to each an every person in this country.

These figures are just the figures directly attributable to the royal family. It's thought that tourism etc adds about £7000 million to the economy every year.

So the next time you think we spend too much on the royals, just think, financially you would be worse off without them.
