Is tournament paintball heading in the right direction?

Concerning field layouts, the 'home' side (or site / sponsor endorsed side) will find out what the layout is, even if it is supposed to be kept secret. Then they will have secured a massive unfair advantage.

Publishing field layouts beforehand does away with this possibility and means everyone has a fair chance (if they are bothered enough to).

I agree with the sentiment of not publishing, but realistically this will just mean that only the priviledged few get to see the field beforehand, ... which was just the situation that publishing the layouts was done to avoid !

I recall a penalty system being used for those who practiced the field before the event - but I see your point about the "privileged".

There was a DYE youtube video featuring Tonton's practising at their home field in Feb '09, and they were using the Malaga 10 layout - post 9 onwards here: http://www.p8ntballer-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?132994-malaga-layout!&p=1337178&highlight=tonton+malaga#post1337178

It still happens.

I really think the biggest problem blocking the growth of our 'hobby' is the mentality over the last 8+ years or so that tournament paintball is only about being the best - the best team, the best player you can be etc. The emphasis has been on trying to create pro players, ... basically the undercurrent of attitude within the sport has been, "If you only want to play tournaments for fun, then this isn't the sport for you". I have seen many players leave because at the end of the day they were made to feel inadequate because they would not train every month / travel the width of the country to play 8 mins paintball etc. Arguably we have succeeded in distilling down to maybe <30% (?) of the previous player base by shedding these guys who did not take their 'ball seriously. If we now want them back, I think we need to lighten up some !

Since when has tournament paintball had a direction? Since when has paintball had a direction for that matter?

Paintball isn't a sport. It's a hobby.
It isn't run by a National Governing Body.
Very, very few players train at all. Most muck about.
Realistically it's too expensive to ever become accessible enough (financially and culturally) to get the numbers into the game to allow it to develop into a sport.

You want to make tournament paintball "better" in the short term?
Listen to all of the players all of the time. Change stuff to please them. Then change it again in 3 months time. Fail to make money and close your series. End up in a seedy B&B pimping your daughters out to Stongle to afford your next meal.

You want to change UK tournament paintball in the long term?
No-one has the money or the level of control to make the required changes happen within the UK. Paintball has been and always will be a hobby in the UK. Not a sport. Therefore, tournaments will struggle to cater for the demands of the players. The views of the players are so diverse that no single tournament format can cater for everyone.

Run a number of events (not a series) where the format is different at each event and each event has prizes in it's own right. This will cater for everybody. People will pick and choose which events they attend. Some will enter and play the formats that they think they don't like and might surprise themselves and find that actually, at the end of the day, they're all fundamentally the same. Throw a woodsball tournament in there for the hell of it and you might attract a bit more crossover from the big game scene. Include a limited paint format event and push it with kids and students at local schools, colleges and shopping centres and you've got another talent pool. Run a punter tournament with mech markers alongside a 'normal' tournament by flyering local pubs, sports centres, gyms, 5 a side football teams, etc and you've got another pool of talent to pic from... Suddenly the tournament scene has a couple of more people and the events get a bit more exciting and the game starts to grow. Possibly into a sport.

I like the idea of NOT publishing the field layouts. You don't turn up to play Sunday League football knowing what formation your opposition is going to rock up with.

Nice post Stan ... has some pretty cool appraisals and ideas....

As well as the rumoured changes, there are some interesting comments below the article! Typical knee jerk responses from what appear to be the kids who have been in the sport 5 minutes and who don't pay their way vs some of the more reasoned arguments from the few who have been around a while and see where the tournament scene is heading without more cash cows to finance the younger players.

I'm not convinced bigger fields are the way forward.

I do agree that a change in bunker distribution would help the players potentially get more bang for their buck. I remember playing Campaign in 2003 (i think) and a couple of the fields had massive bunkers on the 50 that eliminated 60% of laning off the break. Everyone made their primaries and got the chance to shoot some paint. This comes back to catering for people at the appropriate level for their skill set.

Coaching shoudn't be banned. At all. Sideline shouting should be encouraged from as many people as possible so it negates the effectiveness of any coaching.

Adjustments to PSP RaceTo Format and 2011 Season

The PSP is taking steps to make it possible for talented players of all sizes, ages and pay grades to compete nationally. Currently, smaller and wealthier players have an edge in the PSP. The field layouts have not been friendly to larger players, and the teams with heavy financial backing can afford to practice the field layout every weekend. It's time to make sure the most talented players are the ones excelling in the PSP, not just the most fortunate.

After speaking with many current and past players of the PSP as well as our Master Sponsors, we have decided to make the following changes:

· Lengthen the field 10 feet per side (Total size will now be 120 x 170 feet)
· Eliminate Pit-side coaching and communication
· Field Layouts will not be released prior to the events
· Adjust position of bunkers to better suit a wider variety of players
· Adjust classification system for D1 - Pro, now that the Semi-Pro division is absent

We're taking the game in a direction that will include more players, as opposed to excluding them as has been done in the past. We need to make sure players can still compete when they turn 30 or are not in a financial position to practice every weekend. We feel this is the right thing to do for our customers and our business as well as the sport and industry.

The PSP is here for the long run. These steps are in an effort to include more people in the game, while still making sure the ones with the best paintball skills win. More information on the 2011 season will be released in the weeks to come at http://www.pspevents.com
