Tournament Rules:- are they too complex?

Surely the sport needs progression and sensible evolution through carefully considered and sometimes small changes over a long period of time?

Whilst alternative formats will offer their less mainstream and perhaps simpler rules (Formula 5 is a prime example - And very good fun it was I might add), the rules for the major tournaments have been developed over a long time and almost certainly in a rational and sensible manner.

Rich Harris carried out a trial for the Race to 2 format in the last round of the CPPS. Sideline coaching was introduced. The aim? To see if it worked and to gauge the reactions of the players involved. Race to 2 in fact, did not exist at the start of the year in the CPPS. It was tested at round 3 as a one off event and then became the format for Div 1 for rounds 4, 5 & 6. I feel I can speak for the majority of the players who take part but it has been very well received.

My point is, take a look at how it was done. Very slowly and with careful consideration. A ham fisted approach would have done nothing but to create too many ripples. This is surely one of the reasons why the CPPS has grown so well and become so popular.

The 'new' set of rules in question reminds me of a certain series I myself played in quite a few years ago. I look back and compare it to Race to 2 and present day X-Ball we play now. Would I wish to go back to the old ways? Would I heck. Would many players in the UK with at least a couple of years experience want to revert? I very much doubt it.

Look how the game of Football has developed since it's inception. Would reverting to rules from say, the late 19th century do the sport much good?

Before anybody starts crying, yes I know Paintball is a newer sport and has been around for a much shorter period of time. I was of course, speaking comparatively.

buddha thats not always the case but there would have to be changes, throughout paintball.
one governing body for a start.
multi formats can be run under one governing body i;e motorsport is made up of multiple formats but all are run under one banner the FIA.
as for the technical side i;e boards, etc would have to be homologated by the governing body.
so any manufacturer could still produce there, particular item but it would have to pass certain tests and rules to be allowed to enter a tournie.
the best example is motorsport where there are numerous manufacturers of parts and electronics, but all these parts have to pass certain rules and regulations.
this still allows the little guys to compete on a level playing field in theory:)

I understand the reasoning behind it, but personally I say it's the reverse order of things anyway. Just punish cheating. Invest in the quality of reffing and make the penalty for cheaty guns so severe that it's not worth having one. Otherwise it's like saying holding is illegal in football, so we'll amputate the hands of all players.

I wonder if 'no rules' paintball has a shot at becoming popular, in the same way that UFC became more popular than boxing.

You get 10 guys, arm them with guns, and have no fxxxing rules whatsoever.

I'd pay to watch that.

If 'no rules' isn't the best way to market it, we could always call it 'Aussie Rules' paintball, which would basically mean the same thing...

it,s the basic rules that need addressing.
minimum safety equipment rules,( no problem)
players code of conduct, any abuse of officials etc = instant game ban etc depends on level of abuse.
guns found to be hot= game ban etc
but this has to include all aspects of paintball scenario and tournie:)
