You must remember that Sup-Air tournaments evolved out of the woods over a period of time. First transition was dropping the silly DMP and other country’s camouflage designs to get away from the military look that was affecting media coverage of the sport. Next came concept fields of WDP’s Hyper Ball, speed-ball fields of pyramids and hay bails, finally ending up with Sup-Air of today.

Here in the UK playing recognised events in the woods will never get of the ground again rec-ball, walk-on, woods ball what ever you care to naming it, will stay were it is due to not attracting the right sort of media coverage.

The likes of Steve Bull worked very hard to show paintball in a positive light, going back to dressing up like the military playing in the woods with markers now looking more and more like real fire arms will inevitably lead to paintball being band permanently in the UK.

Dont be a silly billy!!! Why do i play woodsball as opposed to sup air? mainly cos i want more than 5 mins on a field at any one time plus you dont have to deal with the politics that surrounds sup air...the endless bitching...and the premo's but it's up to the individual to decide what they like and what they want to do.I cant say one is better than the other but i can say i enjoy the woodsball side a lot more!
But to state that woodsball will be the downfall of paintball in the uk is a bit much methinks?
The first person to be hit i nthe head with 15balls ramping and carried off the field in a coma will probably gain more media attention.Yes i do have ramping...but no i cant use it where i play.
People that play with replica like guns are far and few between in my opinion?
You maybe see one at the most at a walkon at YPC this is my own observations and i cant speak for other gaming venues.
Paintball for me is a laff and a good time nothing more really, the genesis events just add a bit more competion and variation to the norm.
Just my tuppence worth there fellas.

here here, Shades you obviously have very little knowledge of the world view of woodsball, infact scenario and woodsball are seperate and as said Sup air gets more bad press( check spec ops forums and you will see the ammount of bad press that speedball attracts) there is even a case of a young youth getting blinded because he got 27 bps and the force lifted his mask up and he got two in the eye( top of the line mask also). Speedball hasn't "evolved" out of the woods and playing in the woods is NOT playing army, speedball as a whole is a different aspect of the game and many enjoy both. To say we should stop dressing in silly cammo is nieve and misinformed.
I take it you are familiar with Tygers work on webdog radio? I asked him why he used and automag and not a scenario type marker especially when playing in a few scenario games that he does. His reply was even thought it wasnt pure woodsball he used the marker that was best equiped for his needs( NOT silly if you ask me) also that he regularly plays speedball but over times gets bored of the same game type day in day out.
The sppl leauge is very sucessful in America and many of the top teams dont use scenario equipment( it is a purely woodsball lay out even though it says scenario leauge this is to attract attention as it is more popular).
I chose to dress in digi cammo to stay hidden and play the game I enjoy most, to use tactics and I am VERY seriouse.
Even if people do want to play scenario or woodsball I dont think it is any buisness of yours to say how they dress is silly if it improves their game.
If it evolved from the woods then woods would no longer exhist( survival of the fittest i believe) speedball is just another version of the game. How can you refuse to aknowledge you paintball history? Suppose you think a Splatmaster is silly to. Sorry for the rant I cant stand attitudes to the sport I love.
P.S. dont play the playing army card as most armys across the world dont even do woodland combat, plus I use an Angel hardly military looking.

phillips... are you in the army? do you know what you are saying? the majority of my training was in woodland... we move onto urban, jungle and mountain, but its based around the advantages you create in the woodland... alot of the tabbing and norman runs etc are done in woodland because the ground their is so versatile!

hehe try the POC then youll find out things properly!!

thanks

Funny you should say that I am not but my next door neighbour who has just come out of the army stated that in MOST countrys they do not train mainly in the woods and in certain countries they do not even have woodland as a large enough terrain.
I certainly know that in the U.K. we do train in woodland environments a lot but paintball has nothing to do with "playing army" unless it is scenario and even then I know 3 current army officers who play paintball, they state time and time and time again that paintball couldnt be further from being in the Army. Plus im on about woodsball not scenario.
That wasnt my point anyway the fact of the matter is woodsball is not playing army and should be seperated from scenario as by most people it is.

ah well fair enuf... you know it all...nah embrace it all... at our local site we mix up with scenario and rec-ball players... in some respects the scenario guys play alot more tactically and i particularly enjoy mixin it up with the mil sim guys who come!

having said that, the last guy who came down told us about an atv buggy that had 6 tippmans on creating a kind of minigun effect..... THATS MENTAL!

but mil sim/scenario sould be incorporated where and when it can.... it brings a new edge to some fields!

thanks

Oh no ill quite happily enjoy a game of paintball with any scenario players its just I dont enjoy a scenario game because I dont enjoy that so I wouldnt want to take part if you get me. Oh and yes tippmann used drills and attached tippmanns to them( super fast mechanical firing I am not sure how they did it) it looked awsome although an A-5/drill does seem kind of weird, have you seen special ops buggy? ohhhhh D/T :D
p.s. my point is though you wouldnt bring a woodsballer who didnt enjoy speedball to a speedball game. Sam goes for woodsball and scenario.

That comment is err ... nonsense ... most Armies train for multiple combat environments whether temperate 'countryside' [including woods obviously], jungle [very wooded!] desert, urban, arctic, etc.

Regardless, I personally don't have an issue with scenario, 'woodsball', recball or tournie. Each to their own. Its all good fun. Some players play all types for the variety.

Personally I like prefer woodsball and scenario as I like to play on large fields with large numbers of people rather than 5 or 7 a side. In these environments camouflage can be very useful; obviously in tournie its utterly pointless as everyone can see everyone else at the start.

Each to their own.

OK, this is starting to irritate me. Up front I'll state that I've been involved in the sport of paintball in the UK in one way or another for over 15 years, so I do know just a little about the history!

In the beginning, there was woodsball, which was just called paintball as there wasn't any other kind. There were rental days, walk on days, big games and even tournaments and they were all played in the woods. A few sites had what were called "speedball" fields which were very open using artificial barricades like pallets and strawbales, encouraging fast play and loads of paint usage (hence why they were popular with rental sites), and there were 2 tournaments held each year on this kind of playing area - Speedball and Arenaball. These were quite popular, and someone (WDP?) invented Hyperball (the one with big corrugated tubes), which was followed a couple of years later by Sup Air. These proved very popular with tournament players, and more and more tournaments went over to the format. In the end, teams only wanted to play the speedball type fields and started to shun the woods based tournaments. So market forces had their way and tournaments in the UK were just held on sup air fields.

So Shades is right about that - sup air evolved from woodsball for tournaments. Now there are a few people who have decided there is still a place for woods based tournaments and events, and we see the rise of the Genesis series. This has probably come from the return of the big games and scenario games, and THEIR renewed popularity has probably been in part due to the fact that many of the current scenarios are definitely NOT mil-sim - even most of the "set in the present real world or close" scenarios are fictional rather than reenaction in the UK, e.g. Caspian Pipeline & Staargate this year, and their predecessors including Drug Wars and South Park.

So we have a couple of basic facts here that some posters on this thread seem unaware of :
1. Yes, sup air DID evolve from woodsball
2. No, NOT all scenarios are mil sim

We are now in the happy situation where just about every baller in the country can play whatever style they like, be it arena based tournament, woodland tournament, walk on (both field types), mil sim scenarios and non-military scenarios. They are all paintball. I personally enjoy (or have enjoyed when fit & young enough) all the above except mil sim which just doesn't float my boat particularly, and I'm starting to have a problem with all this in-fighting between the various factions.

Its not really fighting though I am going to get started with speedball very soon, I agree with every single point you just made so I can't really argue  :D The only trouble is most people don't see it as clearly as you do they think all woodsball games are "playing army" or get them confused its a shame really for both woodsballers, scenario players, people who enjoy both and the speedballer who is misinformed.
Cudos ont he great post by the way its shut me up :p
