Whether they can be considered a sport just depends on how seriously the competitors take it, you take a few doing a walk on as a one off with no interest in anything other than having fun then whether it's in the woods or a sup air field it's a game...have teams that take it seriously enough to train regularly, organise tactics, practice different techniques such as breakouts etc and play in competitions then whether you're hiding behind an inflatable bunker or a tree you can start calling it a sport...

Just my 2p but i'd say the only difference between a game and a sport is the level of commitment shown by the players and people could quite happily put just as much time and effort into either woodland or sup air...

As to more woodland teams turning up i think there has always been plenty of players who preferred or just enjoyed playing in the woods so when the tournaments started appearing again and becoming more widely known they were bound to pick up teams and players and a decent rate...

Of course this is just the late night ramblings of a beginner who reads too much so it could all be rubbish but what the hell, i've got the whole internet to hide behind :)

different angles on the field, breakouts, laning, running n gunning loads more... get me?
on a decent woodlands field you can have all of this just more varied

the best example i can think of is the village at skirmish necton prefer that one field to anything i played paintball wise

but not something you can pick up and transport plus most of the other fields are more suited to recballers

I love the woods and will continue to play there. I don't think I will enjoy sup air as much as I do woodland games. I will enjoy a game of sup air though I mean it's paintball right?.

I've been messing about and learning stuff for a year now and my survival rate in the woods has slightly increased. Not that I am giving the woods up but I will be trying sup air out in the New Year.

I just want to see how the other half lives, and let them mash me to bits because I have not played before. Even if it's a one off I will be able to use actual life experience to make points on why I like/dislike sup air. I hope I like it I would hate to go somewhere just to be miserable all day so I'm open minded about it before I go.

I'll still be going to the woods every month for my fix though.

Oh yeah and as for 'progressing to sup air' I disagree, I don't have a panic on to get into sup air to be 'good' at paintball.

what do you think you do at a 5 man woodland tourny:confused:

you still shoot lanes, you still breakout, angles are more important on a woodland field as there tends to be more cover, you still get mugged so running and gunning is still used.

I have played both, bullys series in 2004 and divs 1,2 and 3 at the Uk masters this year and also played the Genesis wood land tournies. The skills required in both games are 90% the same but the mindset is different.

I love these threads where the differant sides of paintball bash each other, there should be a sticky "play both before you comment" and by that i mean both types of tournies NOT walkons

peace to sup air and woodsball as i truely enjoy both

we as a club, want to offer something to guys who want to do suppair, but consider all there experience woods. u have punters, walkons, then gap, then suppair, we want to fill the gap, take players from walkons, introduce them to tourneys, then up to suppair.

this is how it is done in america, so i am told, and we think it is the way forward, after all, not everyone likes suppair, and even if they do they arent always good at it.

i commend cannock cobras for doing similar, why not have more teams doing it.

Woodland TOURNAMENTS are just that, proper tournaments with dedicated teams played in woods rather than on a SupAir field. Walk on days are recball, not much different from rental customers when it comes to format and seriousness. And big games/scenarios are a very different matter too.

Tournament paintball started in the woods (seeing as the various types of arena didn't even exist then), and apart from the Xball format the basics haven't changed with the move to supair. You have teams of varying levels of ability, usually divided into a number of divisions (most often based on these skill levels), the teams in each division play each other in a round robin to determine the best, there is sometimes a play-off between the best teams at the end. You need kit up to the latest standard, you need dedicated players who turn up on time, you travel large distances and maybe even stay over the night before, you COMPETE to the best of your ability. You either attempt to get the opposition's flag into your base, or a centre flag into theirs, while shooting out as many of the opposition as you can while doing it.

Teams would travel all over the world to compete in the top tournaments, the way they do today. The Campaign Cup started in the woods, as did the Mayhem Masters and the World Cup in the US.

There are some similar skills in both, and some different skills for each. I have played both, and my personal preference is purely down to the fact that my skills and style are more suited to woodland play.

One of the biggest problems we had in this country was when the woodland tournie players originally went to Sup-Air they went en-mass, thus decimating the woodsball competitions. Since that time the bridge between woodsball and Sup-Air has been weak with only a few crossing the gap.
With the advent of NPC and the increased interest in woodland tournies, Sup-Air will receive a bigger influx of players that like the competition, but need a different field of conflict.
Sup-Air is the adrenalin rush version of Paintball
