Uh-oh... they've figured it out. Fortunately, businesses are not democracies, and the cries of the unwashed masses don't really bug us if the masses are still buying stuff.

Too true. I have no anti-corporation or anti promoters or anti-anything else agenda, I just wanted to challenge the assumption that it would be of any benefit to the 99% of us who aren't going to appear on TV.

Ah well even if I was announced as one of the 100 mist influencial people in UK paintball I suspect there isn't a damn think that I can do about it. I'll just have to take the good with the bad and hope I can still shoot people with my marker...

Do that enough times and you might get on T.V ;)

That assumes that any team will let me play for them (but that's another string, which I'll bump in mo...)

Sadly with the rocketing prices that may be a result of the televisation of paintball I won't be able to afford the practice required to become good enough (assuming that I have sufficient raw talent...). Point taken, but my posit remains; TV will benefit the few not the many, if I were part of the few it would not change the situation of the many.

Richard

p.s. thanks for all the responses, I have enjoyed reading a real debate about a subject that has always been a given before :)

If TV takes hold, and audiences watch, then increased participation in the sport will result in prices of equipment going down, therefore you will be able to play more, so you wil see a benefit...;)

>cynic on<
and someone will get very rich in the process.
>cynci off<

It is good because it will help grow the sport. I think a lot of paintballers who can't adapt (and there are tons of paintballers out there who don't want to know anything about change) are going to feel displaced by the tallented kids who come in and just 'do' what they had to train for ages to do, and take all the glory.
For you personally Rich, it may not be the best thing, but when they get the marketing right and they get it on television, there will be no stoping it. And you can be sure with the amount of money invested in the TV deals, that they're going to do everything they can to make this the biggest thing they possibly can.

Really? have you read the rest of this string mate? there are many that would suggest that TV deals and increased buyers might push the prices up (e.g. Nike footballs/football boots etc).

Colin, you are right, things will be as big as they get and it is in the interest of anyone who has influence that it is. I am not saying that there is anything wrong with that by the way, I posted the question as a reaction to the simple assumption that TV deal = good for sport without any actual thought going into it
