Full netting would easily stop the Salms of this world, and I can't really understand why it wasn't in place. This was the World Cup for goodness sake - Campaign & other, lesser tounaments manage it. No disrespect to Gillie, Hatts & Bully, but the 2002 series event at Witton Castle isn't exactly the same status & level as the WC, but they can manage it so why couldn't the WC?

Tazzhc10 - sadly as in almost all sports even the very best will cheat if they think they can get away with it, even if they don't need to.

I have to admit when I saw the ariel shots of the fields on Warpig I wondered about the lack of netting on a number of fields boundaries.

I would have thought *especially* in the states with the litigacious society that exists removing any opportunity for people to stray into dangerous areas would have been removed.

Looking at the pictures there seemed to be a lot of space with a bit of a service road running parallel to a non-netted area. Great spot for spectators NOT!

I wonder why it was done and I think it might have had something to do with the costs involved

BAD TO THE BONE
There are plenty of 'stadiums' or at least a football field that has a stands around them in the florida area that could be used. They seem to attached to high schools and other such places who must be up for for taking a few bucks out of Jerry Brauns fist
(some chance):D

I'm just wondering. Is there any stadium in the world big enough for 12 10-player paintball fields plus trade stands, staging area and all the other space needed?

And I could think of a lot of other uses for entry fee money than netting to guard against snipers. Namely marshall training and more marshalls!

Wadd, you don't need a stadium to be able to house the whole event, just two finals fields, trade booths and concession stands.
The rest of the fields could be outside the stadium on grass.
The semis and finals can be held on the stadium fields with the prelims played outside and in the stadium.

Just the same as we do it over here :)
I really wonder just how much legwork has ever been done to secure such a venue !!!
Or was that just me being cynical ?

All my American friends are jealous of the wonderful, grass fields the Millenniums are played on. I can't understand what the big hold-up is for the US promoters. Could it be something to do with liability? Insurance? Clean-up, which could be solved by those wonderful new ball-suckers? Or is it just greed/expense?

I grew up across the street from a big high school that could accommodate a pretty big event. And I know colleges that often have some available capacity and could certainly use some additional revenue.

So I don't know what gives.

This would have stopped the 'spoiled brat' antics of this guy!
I'm sorry Roland but I don't think it is such a vlaid point !
The field is a natural protectoin with no spectators allowed to view from there anyway, to try and make provision for this Salm event is about sensible as building a concrete roof over the tournament in case a plane crashed on it.
Jeremy Salm did sometihng that nobody could have envisaged and therefore it is unreasonable to criticise the promoters for leaving that side un-netted on that basis.
Just my opinion !

There could be a lot of valid criticisms of the World Cup, but this isn't one of them. Spend a couple of thousand dollars to protect against the possibility of a sniper? Get real!

There was just as much a need for safety netting around all the fields when there was woods fields: none.

I would much rather have the money spent on refs and a rental of a few lights for the award ceremonies.

Steve

PS. I should have added "in my opinion".
