ROLAND this may help you a little more,

Ramping is a feature in some electronic markers that automatically shifts the mode of fire from semi-automatic to fully automatic as long as the trigger is pulled at a specified rate. Ramping can be difficult to detect, both because it may not be consistent or easily observable by a human. Ramping modes can also be hidden in the software, such that a marker will fire in legal semi-auto mode when being tested, but in an illegal ramping mode by the player.

To counter the problems with enforcing semi-auto rules, some leagues allow a specific ramping mode. The rule specifies a minimum time between shots of 66 milliseconds (approx. 20 shots per second), and that no more than one shot may be fired for the first three trigger pulls. The rate of fire is enforced using a device called a PACT Timer, a standard firearms timing device that measures the time between shots. The following are common league specific ramping modes. Many high-end markers have these modes preset in their firmware:

PSP Ramping - Ramping kicks in after 3 shots; player must maintain 5 bps to remain firing fully automatic. Rate of fire cannot exceed 15 bps.
NXL Ramping - Ramping kicks in after 3 shots; player need only hold down the trigger to maintain fully automatic fire. Rate of fire cannot exceed 15 bps.
Millennium Ramping - Ramping kicks in after 7.5 bps; player must maintain 7.5 bps to maintain fully automatic fire. Rate of fire cannot exceed 15 bps.

but we dont use NXL OR PSP ramping here i dont think so ignore those, and although it says mill ramp is 15bps its 12bps here.

So the cheats used to use a board that could ramp when everyone else didn't so to stop the cheats everyone is now allowed to 'cheat'!

Thats one way of solving the problem!:D

Roland

Yeah sadly the only way.

At the death of semi, we were all shooting 20+ bps. It was semi auto in name only, it was dangerous and expensive.
Some tiny portion of that is skill but its mainly down to what board and gun you got and how you set it up.

Look to the alcohol prohibition in the US for a historical example of why it's easier to legalise and regulate a problem than bend over backwards to eradicate it in vain. Uh oh, my ashtray's on fire!

Current (simplified) Millennium rules:
Millennium Ramping - Ramping kicks in after 3 shots; player must maintain 6 bps. Rate of fire cannot exceed 12 bps. :)

Thanks for all of your replies.

I now have a much better understanding of the issue and can see both sides of the argument.

I have just set my Etek up to ramp up to 15bps and its awesome (and scary)!

Playing my first game on Sunday for about four years so will let you know what I think.

Its a mix of walk ons and punters, I pity the punters with thier Tippmans.

There used to be a lot of bull talked about ROF, whilst I don't deny that good tournamnet players could lay down a huge amount of paint (I was on the receiving end!) I don't think the average rec-baller consistently hit much about 10bps if they were lucky.

Is ramping mode available on starter markers ie Ion's etc or just higher end markers?

To make your etek compliant with the current rules you'll have to adjust the rof cap down to 12 (or 13.33 if you're using PSP =ramp1 on the etek board). If you're using an etek1 then the Millennium ramping (ramp3) will still be legal, but the activation is 7.5 pps rather than the current 6pps so you'll have a very slight disadvantage. PSP is fun though, huh? When you can fire 15.4 bps with your tongue there's something very wrong! :p
