Sorry Sephiroth, but you're talking a whole different degree of big here. No, skiing and snowboarding aren't in the same league as professional soccer but they are still way, way bigger than paintball.
ermmm i think not

ile find that site wher it says....
'paintball is the fastest growing sport in the world... it is already bigger than snowboarding due to our survey'

it says something like that...

Both Skiing and Snowboarding also enjoy the benefit of lots of TV coverage which does bring in a reasonable income in the form of television rights and advertising.

what do u lot think professional paintball is?
OK for all those who are arguing over definitions and cutting and pasting what "professional means".....that was the original question. Not what's a pro-baller, which is what the argument has become. Certain posters have managed to change this into an argument about the dictionary definition of the word proffesional.........weird.

The actual answer? yes a few players do get paid to play, they make a living at paintball, it is their job. They are professional paintballers (by definition).
A lot more players recieve financial help, sponsorship and other benifits to allow them to play paintball cheaply/free.......by definition they aren't proffesional (paintball doesn't pay their mortgage or food bills) they are by definition lucky b@$st@ds :)
Then theirs the rest of us, with sponsorship and support which allows us to afford an otherwise impossibly expensive sport.
As for a pro-baller..... means something different to a proffesional player........ your a pro-baller the minute you play in that division, doesn't mean your getting paid......maybe not accurate by dictionary terms, but who cares? Yes we use the abbreviated form of proffesional to mean something different.......but I use the term pro to mean someone good at something.
Does it really matter? I can just see it now.......
"did you see the manc union - Newcastle outkast match on Sunday?"
" no I don't watch paintball as they confuse me with their terminology"

You are thinking of Snowboarding and Skiing separately but in reality they are all one industry (economy of scale)

Even in the United States where (Paintball has overtaken Snowboarding) Skiing is still far larger

According to Ski Magazine some 40-50 Million Americans partake in Skiing/Snowboarding annually. Even though the majority are only infrequent participants thats a whole lot of skiing gear being sold which means the manufacturers of that equipment have a lot of money for sponsorships

yup, everyone went off to argue about what the word meant, instead of answering your question :)

ok here is what ONE site said...
According to a 2001 study conducted by the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association, paintball ranks third in popularity in the United States in the extreme-sports category, behind skateboarding and inline skating, with 7.7 million Americans playing the game.

"....in the UNITED STATES in the extreme sports category....", "with 7.7 million AMERICANS...".

Read my posts again, and you'll see that I always clearly defined that I was talking about the UK market. The US and UK scenes are very, very different!

Is that tourny ballers though??
I'd say in the UK there are probably more people that "play paintball" than snowboard because most people have at some time been rec-balling.
7.7million americans might play the game, but do they just use rental equipment? the important stat is how many go out and buy Paintball stuff?
