what's flash filling skeet? do you mean without a marker or filling a bottle that's already got some in??

I didn't know about the concept of making your tank explode by putting oil in, though i did know you're not supposed to get anything in it.

While on the topic, I've seen someone bashing a fill nipple with an allen key before, and thought that may have been dangerous, as it was filled at the time - any info?

Flash Filling
- Filling a bottle very quickly...ie, whack open the fill station and fill teh bottle in a second or two. This overstresses teh tank needlessly, makes it more prone to fail a test, partly because it heats up very quick, which also means, you lose pressure, once it cools back down again.
You dont want to be behind me, when I'm filling! I take a while, not ages, but a couple of minutes at least...bottle facing away from me, looking away from teh gun, goggles on...cringing!

You can use an allen key to try and depress teh pin in a fill nipple, to try and vent some gas...while this can be done...its not adviseable...as it could quite easily go flying...just use an ASA with an on/off.

The other reason is grit in the valve....... it holds it open and you get a slow leak. Definately not a good thing to do though.
For christs sake a new preset is like £60.
Paintballer mentality, £1000 on a marker and a £45 hopper held together with gaffer tape.

Or for a few quid a couple of teathered fill nipple covers to stop the grit from the field getting in there in the first place! I keep a spare fill nipple and orings in my tool box and have just ordered some more fill nipple covers.

Remember if the grit is getting in your fill valve it is likley to be getting in your marker too and doing that some harm.

If you have a leak from the fill valve, depressure your tank carefully and get someone who knows what they are doing to take a look at it!

Also, I have forwarded a link to this thread to mates who don't look at the forum too often, I suggest all do the same, they should thank you for it, If I can judge by some of the shocked replies I have had!

Firstly, were did you get those nipple covers mate?

Second, maybe sticky this for a while ? Some people just dont use their heads sometimes.
Ordered mine today from LiPS, most stores have, or can get them, Smart Parts PMI etc. branded!

Much better and harder to loose than the silly sleeve things that come with most presets!

Exactly mate! Actually, thinking about it - I have never had any 'lessons' on air tanks (did have a little on CO2 back in the day).

Everything I know about HPA I have learned from other players and sites like these. I did know about flash filling (I have a 'much-laughed-at' tank mate strip on my tank [came with it on] - so I know about watching the temp).

After a little searching (and checking the writing on my bottle) I found a lot of useful stuff on http://www.cylindersafety.com/new-composite/pbfastfill.html

I wonder if the guys at HPac (or any other well respected amongst the paintball community company) could draught up some sort of do's and don'ts for bottles and tanks as regards to paintballers. If it was in a pdf format then all websites and forums could post a link to it (I'd gladly host it if needed).

I'd even print a few hundred or so off to hand out at tourneys and sites.

I’m a MAGaholic.
I just last week changed my fill nipples on both my crossfire regs with CP fill nipples. I did notice that the CP nipples had a generous dollop of what looked like Dow 33 inside the nipple, thought it a little strange at the time but then again they must know better.
Should I be worried?
