On a spyder they do have a function (though how effective is debatable) They give you more CO2 to use in your marker so you can lower the working pressure of the marker.
lower pressure + more volume of gas = higher pressure + lower volume of gas.
I tried it on my brothers flash, plugged the hole where it normally goes and shot at around 12-13bps until the hopper was empty and there was no noticable shoot down(except the normal drop off)
On spyders, it looks like this:

So the air is rushing past the chamber so it doiesn't actually have any use, except to provide an ectra place for it to leak
