Is this a paintball forum or a computer security conference!

To be honest lads, people spend more time talking about hoax viruses and sending emails and writing in forums about it, and this probably wastes more time and creates more traffic than most virus's themselves cause!!

Ok so next time I get a virus attack from someone on these boards I will say nothing  and let everyone get infected.

As you haven't been on these boards that long you wouldn't have gotten the email that was spoofed to look like it was coming from P8ntballer admin that was the Klez32 (whatever) virus...all gained from an attack on the P8 forum by a spider that harvested everyones email address's. I couldn't work out what was happening this time but I got there in the end and provided the screen shot to PROVE the attack...no hearsay or rumour mongering involved. If you want to stick your head in the sand regarding security issues then thats the death of your hard drive coming. I agree there are a lot of fake virus warnings given out but a little research sorts those out...there are websites totally dedicated to the hoax virus emails that do the rounds. As I said before, an avatar was the cause of a lot of peoples virus alerts going off some time back and the person concerned admitted that it WAS a virus and they hadn't realised they had the virus and they then had to reformat their hard drive and install decent anti-virus software.

I may not have been on the forums long but I've been round computers for what seems like.... too long.

If everyone used up-todate reputable virus software then it'd be a happier world (even though the evil bas****s who like to try and make our lives online hell live on.)

Anyway, now we've closed this one can we get on with the Paintballing PLEASE.

I for one am grateful that someone like yourself takes the time to address these issues. With over 5000 members the potential damage is great.

I mainly log-on from my office because it has the fastest connection. My address book has e-mail details of over 100 people including the like's of Nike. I imagine their secruity is top of the line but if something piggy backed in, I'm sure they wouldn't be too impressed. Like I say the potential for damage is real. Personally, having my computer down would be a pain the arse and reformatting a f***ing nightmare.

I use Norton Anti-Virus that checks for updates daily. I currently have over 63,000 virus definitions. Haven't people got something better to do with their computer talent than just be a thorn in the side of the rest of us. Or is being a thorn the intention?

Thanks again for bringing these matters to our attention.

1. Automatically every morning at 9:05AM (to give new defs time to DL) - all 70GB of data on my hdds
2. But of course
3. most email attachments I don't even download (use mailwasher to get rid of spam and cack attchments)
4. all downloads get run thru my AV scanner as they're dl'ing
And if it all goes pete tong and AVG can't fix my install, I'll just take the 3 minutes to rebuild my windows + most apps from my ghost image :p ;)

And for the record, I for one am glad that Mark takes the time to alert the rest of us lazy foo's to keep an eye out for a day or two - if everyone on the net acted like that the interweb would be a much less stressful place.
