University Paintball Society? A good or bad idea?

Hey Guys,

Long time since i've been on here. I've been doing A lot of thinking on this subject and was just wondering what your thoughts would be on it... Is it a good or bad idea basically?

I go to Bournemouth University and really would like to get back into the sport. I know a few friends that would like to get into it but you know how people say that then find that they haven't got any money. Especially as it does cost a lot to play which especially puts students off. I haven't approached the Union as to whether or not I can actually set up a society of this kind and im not even sure if its possible with the health & safety risks. However, I thought it would be best to approach the community first and see what you guys would think :)

And sorry if this is in the wrong thread... I never knew where to post it.

There are a few Universities with up and running Paintball societies, best bet would be to try and get in contact with them on here for some first hand and real advice.
:)
I know UWE has an active paintball society, and (I think) Aberystwyth and Portsmouth too. No idea on who to contact on here, but if you can get hold of one of their members/captains then they can point you in the right direction and tell you of the early pitfalls/union requirements and whatnot.

Just don't go expecting a lot of funding from the Unions for it!
:)

Thanks for posting Bam :)

I've just seen their union sites and have noticed that they do run paintball societies. If anyone knows how I could get in touch with them on here it would be greatly appreciated :). I will probably email them later If I cant find them but would be interested to know how they run their society if I could get in touch.

Birmingham Uni have a club that attends NPF Bassetts Pole quite regular. I'm sure if you ring the office they could put you in touch with them.

Lancaster University have a society that does monthly days either at YPC or Prozone.

There are about 20 or so people that go and about a dozen have started buying kit and hopefully by the summer term we'll have enough people interested in playing tournaments to get a team together. Absolutely no guarantee yet but I'm hoping.

I used to be involved with the running of the society at Kent uni, dealing with the union is the easy bit organising students on the other hand is like herding cats. If you can get a reasonable number of people (ours was ten I think) to show interest and pay the minimum yearly sub required by your union they should provide you access to funding. Its much easier to go about it as an activity society rather than a sports club as the rules are far laxer. As for the health and safety concern, its just a case of filling in some paperwork highlighting that you're are going to sites where appropriate safety steps have been taken (ie googles, certified first aiders etc).

Birmingham University's society has tanked; i should know because i'm one of the current commitee members.

It seems like the vast majority of Brum students have an apathetic attitude towards paintball.

@leachy: unless there's a secret Brum uni paintball group that visits NPF behind my back, we have not been to Bassetts Pole for almost 2 years. We currently game at Warped. From what i hear, there was some bad blood between NPF and the former president of the university paintball society (from 2 year back) which is why we switched to Warped instead.

I'm not sure who they were but they were from Birminghan Uni, about 40 of them about 2 months ago.
