Another wrinkle to think about

In 2001, I enquired about bringing gear while on holidays,

Here's what I got back as an answer.

With regard to your email enquiry regarding bringing a CO2 powered paintball
marker into Ireland for vacation. In Ireland CO2 powered paintball markers are
classified as a firearm and can not be held without a Firearm Certificate. At
present it is current policy only to permit the usage of these items for members
of paintball clubs on designated paintball lands. Private ownership of CO2
powered paintball markers is not currently licensed by the Garda Siochana in
Ireland. Accordingly the importation of this firearm would not be authorised in
this instance.

If you have any further enquiries do not hesitate to contact me again.

How could they classify a paintball marker as a firearm? What a bunch of uneducated morons. There's no explosion in a paintball marker, how could it be classified a firearm? Glad I live in the states...

take it easy, there! they can easily classify it as that. frozen paintballs, or even marbles could be shot through it.

just as lethal as a real gun.:(

Yes, but firearms use a controlled explosion to propel bullets. Because paintball markers do not use this controlled explosion, they should not (and cannot, here in the States) be classified as a firearm. It doesn't matter how dangerous they can be, if theres no explosion, there's no firearm (that's why we can play paintball in state parks here, they don't allow firearms, but they weren't able to ban paintball on the same grounds, because legally and technically they are not a firearm)
