Leeds.
There's no point grabbing the whole kit straight away, centres will usually have rental markers and such. The fisrt thing you should look for is the mask, something that's comfortable on your face and doesn't fog up too much.
I'd recommend not getting anything with full head coverage, from my experience this will be much too warm and sweaty after a full day of playing. My personal favourite design of mask are the e-vents, or the e-flex. I found that they fit quite well on a bigger head, when compared to say an i4 which are very low profile and I find uncomfortable.
If price is a big factor, I've heard good things about the Proto FS Switch, which you can pick up for about £40 new?

you absolutely do not need to buy i4s. so long as its comfortable for you and has a thermal dual pane lense then it's a worthwhile investment.
as for full head v face only protection, face only is definitely comfier, but also a paintball will often bounce if it deflects off the top of your head, as opposed to hard plastic which will definitely break it.

Hi I use dye i4 goggles and a ego 09 which are both great, my son is just getting into paint balling and I have bought him a standard Tippman mask and a Tippman gryphon with some extra goodies, I got them from bz paintball great deal and I've tested out today works great. If you buy new and is just starting unsure whether to play permenantly I would start with simple gear like my son, but up to you! The mask gun and gas bottle was £85 from bz paintball I think. Hope this helps

Like most have said try masks on before you buy, I used to have events and loved them but managed to loose them (I have no idea how though which is quite upsetting :( ) but got a pair of i4s the other week second hand for £30 off a friend and to be honest I'm glad I didn't pay more because they're just too small for my face. For some people i4s will be perfect and there are lots of people on here which will say they're the best on the market which justifies the high price tag but if they aren't right for you then it's just a waste of money so try as many pairs as you can first. You shouldn't have any fogging issues with any half decent goggles with a thermal lens, they're one of those bits of kit where it's worth spending a bit more if you find some your comfortable with and like.

Either get a good second hand mask or go for something like the vforce grill. Only about £50 but great quality
