That certainly is a good idea. I also found another great way to stop people stealing your pods. At the start gate, as soon as 'game on' is shouted, you need to quickly turn around and shoot everyone on your own team.
After this happens, you can carry on and play as normal (more wiping of hits may be necessary as you will be alone). Once the game is over and you have won you can then go back and collect your pods with no worries of other people taking them.
