Granted buddha you make a point about coaches not always needing to be an pro/ex-pro, however as you said it need to be some one that understands the not only dynamics of game fully but the techniques required too. Honestly I don't think there are many non-players out there that have this level of understanding.
In the instance of a non-player coach, having them run training through out the season and getting a pro down for a clinic pre season would be a decent alternative.
Like I said, people that don't play but would be good at coaching are few and far in between.
However, and I realise I haven't made this clear enough, when I talked about a non player coach, I wasn't talking about a guy that hadn't played paintball, but rather a coach who is good at understanding paintball, for whatever reason, but that he should NOT be a player on the team as well.
As soon as you have your head coach play as well, you lose all the advantages somebody like that might bring on gameday.
People should not play and coach, it's play or coach. If your coach is a player on your team, the first opportunity you'll have for adjusting your game during an event, would be at night, watching the day's video. By then half the event is gone...
If you have a coach on your sideline, even if in game coaching isn't allowed, he'll be able to see weaknesses, and will be able to adapt the team accordingly for the next game.
That's what I meant by the non-player coach, sorry for the confusion.
