To port or not to port ...

i am looking at investing in a new barrel system. And ive been given the option of the exact same barrel with or without porting. (there is still porting on the muzzle)

What are the advantages / disadvantages of porting?

Simple as that (i hope)

Thanks
Billy

this is what i think

the portedd barrel is quieter because of the more gradual dissipatuion of the gas, however i think that the consumption that a gun has does suffwer a bit whith ported barrels as more gas is used to push the ball with an equal amount of force. So if your gun is a bit of a gas hog then i would go without porting as it could make that little bit more consumtion required in a game.

If you play sup'air, noise isn't really an issue. You only need a quiet barrel when you're sneaking around in woods!!

What barrel is it? What gun is it going on?

i ain't too techy but can someone explain that for me. doesn't a marker put out a relatively fixed output. why would it increase the output for a non ported barrel? it's not like you program your marker of you have a ported or non ported barrel. more air will come out the end of a non ported barrel but thats coz it hasn't dispersed any air through ports.

I am not entirely sure either but as far as I understand, more porting means there are more holes for air to escape so say you use a barrel with little porting at 280fps, then stick an all american (just an example) barrel on it, because there are more holes, more air is escaping therefore not "pushing" the ball as much. You would then get a lower fps.
Thats what happens as far as I know. I am probably totally wrong here but who cares! Someone will come up with a more accurate answer.

Allow me.... :D

If you use a less ported barrel you can turn you're velocity adjustment down a bit and get the same FPS, this is because less air is dispursed through the porting.
Think of it as a hose if you had a hose with holes in it you have to have a higher force of water coming through to get the same amount of water as a hose with no holes. DOes that make sence?
