The Rise of the Interweb

Sid Sidgwick

Tinkering ain’t easy
Did you know that 22% of UK citizens believe in reincarnation? Now, I know that's not something that originated from our traditionally Christian culture. It's more of a trait of post-modern pick n' mix society than anything else, since, with everything available to us, we just pick what we like the sound of and leave the rest. Culture is more fluid in that sense, but I would assert that the direction of its flow is predominantly influenced by consumerism than anything else. Anyway, I'm getting off topic, my point is that far from consolidation, we're experience a diversification of cultures that lack any solid boundaries and are becoming melded into one mass of psuedo-culture that changes with the current trends.
A very 'Parsonian' view in terms of sociology

Nah, Parsons had a serious agenda. There's never gonna be a hegemonic framework or a grand narrative to explain the world. I like structural functionalism as a framework of understanding, but I think the issue we're discussing is too complex to be seen through one particular lens. It's just not a linear causal relationship. We're talking about postmodernity here (the key characteristic of which is rapid change), so it's hard to really apply these old theories expecting a result. Unlike the "natural" sciences, there isn't ever really a clear-cut answer to these kinds of questions, so any opinions I give are just that: opinions...informed opinions, but opinions nonetheless.

Personally i dont think we are culturally deprived because of the internet, i think the more we read and learn then come to our own conclusion the more we see flaws from previous ways of thinking.

If we look at our past culture as a good thing then where do we end up? Once again we end up back where are at the moment looking back on things that was culture at the time so its just a circle. Would i like a culture as has been? Well yes morals and good old values and traditions look all wonderful and we say look at the state of the youth of these days no respect blah blah blah but at the time these morals and values were obviously flawed to allow the situation to get to where it is.

I mean do we look back and say well the culture at the time was good when we made slaves of black men and women for our own greed or was culture good when we destroyed the locals of any country we decided we would take for ourselves?

To try and get back on track i think you were aiming for our identity as a country? It has been said by many a genius that 2 minds are better then 1 and with the internet 100 million minds are of course better then 2 or 3 or 1000, what the internet has done has made us realise that not everything we do or choose or have been taught is always correct and they someone somewhere will have a different way to look at things and sometimes there way is an improvement on ours. The problem is not being culturally deprived the problem frustration and wanting to self improve without knowing how.

Without bad times there would be no good times :D

Sorry just realised you weren't asking for it :D

Personally I find that with the correct use of the internet children and society could actually become more intelligent, however due to mobile phones simple things like spelling are being lost on them.

Anyone can learn to research and develop something, very few actually develop a passion for it. Our problem in the western world believe it or not comes to family values, look at things like satnavs, most adults will buy a new one instead of just upgrading the software - Engineering firms have made it so that it is cheaper to buy a new tv instead of repairing the current TV.

We seem to have forgotten some of the standards that hold this country together. I find it crazy that on the news this week a Post Office Master has had to leave his job for refusing to serve people if they don't speak English, he himself came from Bangladesh because he likes what this country has to offer.

Sid we live in a crazy mixed up world mate, and someone somewhere is watching it like a TV show having a good giggle:D
