I think what he might have meant was it will be a demonstration sport in 2008, apparently it nearly was in at the Greece Olympics missed out by one vote.

How the hell can they have handball as a sport?
so many sports on the "recognised" list I havent heard off at all

Hmmm, I wonder which version of handball they mean... There is the version which really is a girly sport, kinda like basketball mixed with soccer made even more girly. Then there is the version the Puerto Ricans play in the parks in New York, which is kinda cool and hardcore. They don't throw a football around, they get a small ball and whack it against a wall with their hands. Kinda like racketball with your bare hands.

By Greenpeace. And also a paintball promoter:

He didn't actually get to say who he was representing, but approached my friend and I asking if we'd been paintballing before

After telling him we were both marshals at Ambush he ended his attempt to sell us vouchers and we got into a conversation about the sport. Unlike most of these high-street promoters, he actually knows what paintballing is about and is a marshal at a nearby site (can't remember where exactly).

He then got onto saying how paintballing was going to be a new sport played in the Olympics - starting in Beijing 2008. I remember the thread recently trying to get us to sign a petition to make it an Olympic sport, I guess it already is? If what he says is true, it won't be one of the highlighted events but worth looking out for!!

Anyone want to comment on this?

It ain't gonna happen as things stand and has as much chance of coming off as Piper has of winning the Olympic high jump.
And trust me, unless Pipes has got a neurtron bomb hangin' out his ass, he ain't jumping any more than 18 inches.

All this crap that gets talked about is beyond belief because at the very least, paintball would have to show some form of unifcation and professionalism and therefore we just went head over heels at the first two fences.
Bejeeezus, we can't even sort unification out when some of these guys are threatened with their own commercial existence let alone achieving it to gain Olympic recognition.

Basically, when it comes to getting serious and professional, backdropped against a unified sport, we are pathetic, just kids in the playground acting out the very things kids do, and to be honest, we deserve every frikkin thing we get, or in this case don't get.
