Which one did you buy?
I've been reading half decent reviews on www.pbreview.com but i'm considering the Imagine version which they say has a crap barrel and needs a good hopper, next upgrade is a Delrin bolt.
but otherwise runs well. i'm not expecting 14bps like they state nor will i be playing tourney, it's a gun for me that i can get used to and that i can fettle until it reliably outguns those dire site guns.
For £130 they'll never out gun the big guns but then they're 10x cheaper and when i have to justify the purchase to my wife with a 3 month old daughter, money becomes important and i can't afford a tourney gun, it's as simple as that!
Did you buy the £70 turkey?

If you're just starting out as a rec ball player a Spyder is perfect. It won't give you the performance of the Angels and Cockers, but Spyders are highly upgradeable, so you can at least hold your own for the time being. Most people also forget that a Spyder is infinitely easier to maintain when you're a beginner. As long as you clean your equipment after each use, and remember to oil your stock bolt before you play (definitely look for an upgrade on this part though) you should be fairly well off.

Another thing to consider is a trade off. I introduced some of my friends to paintball, and when they decided they wanted to play regularly I sold my Spyder to one of them, and used that cash plus the money I saved while playing with it to buy a higher end marker. My advice would be to see how you like paintball, and how committed you are to playing regularly. You should only worry about paying for a more expensive marker if you're going to put time into it, otherwise you're wasting your money.

Chopping?

I cut my teeth on Spyders, and wouldn't have had it any other way. Now i've graduated up to Tourney Ball I've got an Evil Omen as a backup and my Spyder is up for trade at last, BUT

1) I've *never* experienced chopping problems with either the Spyder Electra, nor the hybrid Sonix-Xtra electric beast that I fettled last year, I'd say I was hitting up to 10BPS with it with a Revvie plonked on top and it was clean all the way.

2) My Spyder has been used as a backup in Sup'Air practice and while not being able to shoot laser beams, has been able to keep up with the game...the instant throwaway line "don't bother if you're going to do tourneys" isn't carved in stone. If you are on a low budget, a Spyder will do you for Sup'Air at a push.

3) Bad company use spyders!!!! Ok, so the word is that they're Spyders with Timmy internals, but I seem to remember them using AMG's at one point.

They ARE a good place to start, one of the best in my opinion, and I tried a few (Automag, Sterling STP, Inferno, and a few games with a Tippman 98) before moving up to using a Trix and an IR3 for Tourney...and after all the question is "Are they a good place to start"...

So, erm, yes....
PS. Spyder Electra for sale, VGC, Teardrop Chrome Barrel, barrel plug, 9v rechargable and charger, 20oz co2 with buttstock..£80 to your door) ;) :D :p

im new too, but id say look secondhand and try to get a mid priced marker, such as a mag, cocker, or impy, there all easy enough to find and upgrade and if your patient and know where to look, you can pick up a bargin. dont bother upgrading you marker too much, it works out cheaper to buy one with the bits already on or a better marker in the first place, oh and dont just go with the fassion, just get what you NEED!!!! but i think for ease of use, etc the impy is the way to go. but i do love my mags and cockers. good luck. :D
