ok, step closer, i have the disk which i need, it goes to the recovery screen and then just crashes, could it be a hard drive problem, a mate said it could be because the hard drive has come loose, wether thats right or not haha
sounds like hdd is a little broken, bad sectors, how big is it mark(the disk),and is it sata or ide, i may be able to hook you up with a spare if u can tootle over to spalding, as i have a few spare ide drives. or i can just fix it for ya.
If it's same specs as this: http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/advent/pc/t9201.htm, should be a 250 GB WD SATA drive. If you want to check the disk for read/write functionality and bad sectors, use the WD hard drive diagnostics utility from here: http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp?cxml=n . You can download a CD or floppy version, it is a bootable diagnostic disk, so it will boot before Windows loads, and you can test the drive to manufacturer specs from there. If it fails, your drive is going bad and you can contact Wester Digital about a warranty if it hasn't already expired. If it passes, then Windows is your problem, and you should either enter the recovery console and replace whatever system files are missing (instructions here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314058), re-install a new version, or, if you can live without computer games, try out a linux distribution. I can personally recommend Mandriva for ease of installation and use and very attractive interface. You can download it for free, or purchase a version (you get support and proprietary drivers with the purchased version) here: http://www.mandriva.com/en/downloads . You can find others at www.distrowatch.com .
