OK, first off let me say this isn't directed specifically at the Ego as I haven't even seen one. Nor is it specifically aimed at PGI as they are amongst the better mags.

However, personally speaking, my main problem with reviews of pb kit in magazines is that they are always very 'on the fence'.

Now I don't expect mags/websites to slate products from manufacturers who are providing revenue with ads etc but I would like to see reviews that are a little more opinionated. For the most part I have stopped bothering reading the reviews in pb mags as they are virtually all the same...

brief intro about company/gun history
bla bla bla about technical details of gun (e.g. it's a blowback, cocker, open/closed bolt and this is how it works etc)
little bit about how the anno was ok but could be better
little bit about a small machining mark
bit about it being +/- 5-8fps at the chrono
bit about it bursting a couple of balls but that it was down to bad paint
bit about how many shots from a fill
you get the idea

Where's the friggin' percentage score??

In virtually every other consumer area items are rated. I know I have to do this for the areas I write in (mostly computer related)

And I don't want to see a poxy 'out of 5' rating system - I want a percentage. Furthermore I want review scores broken down. E.g.

**********************
Ease of use: 8 - flick it on, input the right air pressure and it's good to go
Looks: 6 - it's a tired design but the blobblaster still has a place in our hearts
Support: 9 - Blobblaster inc has always provided great support
Running Costs: 5 - Like previous bloblasters these get through 9v like Reagan gets through post it notes
Maintenance: 5 - This needs the bolt lubing after at least every case

Total 65%
Does the job but we'd like the next version to address the power hungry tendencies and enjoy a less time intensive maintenance requirement
***********************

Point being with all markers approaching such similar levels of performance I think the average Joe needs a better indication of how the experts view this product.

Just my opinion of course but for the most part pb kit reviews reek of lazy journalism.
Good points,

However I don't think writing 2000 words that are factually accurate, require you to know the gun and give an opinion is lazy :)

As for the score, we have been discussing having more of a scoring system for reviews in PGI, it's something that is already going into the next WPG. However, one of the main problems with paintball guns vs your example of computer stuff is that with benchmarkable kit you can give a set score, like 3D marks for graphics cards or read/write times on USB products etc etc. With a paintball gun the same consistency in testing just isn't possible with all the variations in conditions, paint etc.

Personally I'm all for more scores, but you have to be very careful what they are for as the level if subjectiveness in reviewing paintball products is higher than most other industries, bar maybe music or art reviews. Plus the "formula" that you describe for a review is the same for nearly every product I see in PC Pro etc

EGO

I was testing my mates ego to see if i would want one, and so went through the normal crap. I shot about a box at a training and broke 1 ball (and even then it shot through the break without needing to be cleaned, eg. no curveballs) it was a barrel break, not a chop so it must've been an odd shaped ball.

I then realised i forgot to see how the efficency was, so i filled up my tank (72 cubic inch preset) to 2000psi (thats the best i could get out of the dive tanks) and then shot 7 pods and a hopper.(reloader B)
It definatly shoots great strings, and the on gun menu is easy to follow.
Over all accuracy was good and i was impressed with the weight and efficency.
