No, they aren't that powerful.
Fertiliser and sugar make good ones, which I use when I go ratting.
there amazing, my mate made a small one. half the size of a golf ball. lighted it up. an the smoke from the substance (fertaliser + suger) was amazing. The amount of smoke produced for the ammount you make is pretty incredible.

The sugar does make a nice mess if it gets on your skin.
The worst I have done with pyro is get a home made 20 gram flash salute stuck to a glove once lit.
I looked like I was doing the chicken dance trying to get it off my glove.
Got it off in the end, but it landed about 2 feet away from me.
The bang that is produced is about the same as the bangs at 2mins40sec of this video
