Dear Anglacon,
PLease read the entire thread as you will see that on the whole , the paintball community has been happy to develop without the need for too many patents as it has progressed the technology for the benefit of all.
There are much earlier patents for electronic solenoid gas propulsion projectile devices, so SP ain't that smart or original, just sneaky enough to get ahead of the rest.
Do you have a vacuum cleaner in your home? Is it made by the Hoover company (they were the first) or did you buy something from a cheaper manufacturer because their product fitted your need?
Did Tom Kaye patent the automag? no, others tried to copy, but failed as the quality was piss poor. (Colonial)
Did the Industry benefit from the likes of Tom Kaye/Budd Orr etc.?
Smart Parts did.
Did SP look to the future and see the new wave of Gun manufacturers arriving with better products than theirs and looked for the easy targets to set precedents against. I think so.
National and ICD were easy due to the similarity in design to the Impy. So easy prey to try and get precedents. (sometimes American patent law sucks ass!)
As for the others, possibly not so easy as WDP were working on the Angel V6 for a loooong time!, and the sear trippers? No original artwork and Kingman have deep pockets!!!
So, my anticipation for the new shocker in January has dissapated into a total resentment of the Gardeners and their co-plantifs. Hope they get their come uppance when I patent the pencils they used to design them with!!!!!!!!!
