You are correct in saying they aren't any where near as powerfull as today's semis. The side arms are exactly that--they stay on your side in a holster or whatever except in an emergency. You aren't going to get any kind of range with them (the barrels on the one's I've seen aren't good and only 8" or so long.
The way I've seen these used is when someone is about to be rushed and their main weapon ran out of paintballs or something. That or being able to shoot with 2 guns to trick the oponent. These things just aren't for any extended play.
I don't have experience with the PT Extreems, but if they are like others, I wouldn't count on them for much more than 25-35' IMO.
