Location, Location.
I played paintball for the first time in about five years on Sunday. My mates dragged me out of bed for a birthday surprise and all I got were these lousy bruises.

This post is designed to answer a couple of questions in my head and to hopefully provoke a debate. It is not an attack on anyone, which is why i won't be using names etc.

So the site I went to, is owned by a well known company and falls under a well known branded network of sites. There were about 30 or so players id say, with two marshalls and two people working on the safe zone. First point - two marshalls for thirty players? In my experience, not enough. It was basically self marshalling, which on punter days doesn't really work. Second point, from the first game, guns weren't working, ran out of gas, had to be swapped out. Now it was a cold and damp day which would account for some of the issues, but not guns running out of gas. Third point, steamed up goggles. Are we still at a point where we provide players with steaming goggles? Here's an easy solve. Soap and water. But we weren't even provided that. Just tissue. This was the number one gripe for all groups and my mates who are the Target demographic, who have money to spend specifically said they wouldn't go back because of it. Surely this is bonkers? On the flip side of this, my friends said they felt like the entire day was a money making exercise and they got very little value from it.

To wrap up - is this experience indicative of many sites? Has cost cutting become the name of the game and every last penny is accounted for? Is infrastructure looked at as a waste of money in these difficult times? Have sites actually taken on board anything that players have said for a long time? In my particular case, Im sure these decisions come from higher up the food chain but what's it like elsewhere? Do sites want to retain a loyal playerbase that has money to spend or do they just want numbers through the door?

Ps. We all had a good day as a bunch of mates, but none of them would go again which I think is sad.

Thoughts? Am I asking too much for the money I spend?

It varies hugely wherever you go. I only take people i know to sites that i've checked out first by ringing up the office and arranging a visit so i can see a normal day in action...

No matter which way you look at it, it's an expensive day out. As a result, i normally take people for a half day if i know they haven't been before or if they're struggling for cash.

They get the same buzz in half a day as they would in a whole day.
It's cheaper.
You can do something else for the rest of the day.
It leaves them wanting more (normally).

Name and shame Chris, name and shame .. if they are doing paintball a disservice by giving crumby value for money then tell everybody so we all know to stay well away from them until they change their habits .. as long as you keep to the truth, nobody can criticise or do anything against you mate ....

I will do something controversal here and defend DF... Sort of. =P

I've played a few punter days with mates at their Solihul site and had good experiences both times. Friendly staff, Infernos were mainly in working condition... Talking to the staff they all enjoyed working there and they were mainly left alone by the upper management because they kept making money.

On the other hand, that's the only good DF I've been to. Played at a few others over the years and have had wildly different experiences... All negative hehe. You all now how it goes...

Not delta force. I'll think on it Pete.
although going a little off topic i also instantly thought you would be talking about delta force.
doesnt this show that from the deep south to the distant north the views of delta force sites are generally the same? although i think it's even more worrying that this chain probably recieves the largest volume of customers/potential future players across the country and if they are generally getting the same experience it could be quite damaging for the wider industry.

What has always made matters worse is the non DF sites have all the sophistication and organization of a bout of diarrhoea ..... they are a joke ... why?

Because it's self evident the DF marketing strategy is a huge success .. they go out into malls and shopping centres and get in people's face and raw market their product .... what do the non DF sites do?

Fuhk all !! [for the most part]

It's an absolute no brainer that if they got themselves together and financed a similar campaign across the country, they would clean up .... and remember here, Delta Force have got a really bad name for themselves, as to whether they deserve it? I haven't ever had the 'pleasure' of going on any of their sites and playing but there's no smoke without fire and there's just been waaaay too much smoke for my liking .....waaaayy too much.

They also create a federation that they distort to make people think is independent of them and it then goes on to validate DF which is a cheap, cheap way of deceiving people, I don't like that, it stinks ... anyways, the point is, for all these negatives regarding Delta Force, they still get customers which of course is not because of their customer service but is because of their ongoing marketing campaign that ensures new blood being pushed through the Delta Force body of sites.

The remainder of UK sites sits backs, moans and ultimately does nothing as a collective .. they are effectively useless, and DF must be sitting back laughing their frikkin heads off at the complete and utter failure of non DF sites to commercially respond .... our industry is unique in its stupidity, it really is ...

I remember reading a post about a year ago I think.

The post was basically asking for individuals to go out to sites and give them a honest review by going on a 'secret' shopper experience, which sounds like a great idea. Problem with that is the funding for people to do it, on their own it's a little boring, and with a day out with a decent amount of paint, it would cost about the same as a full days training on an ball field.

I have personally worked on several paintball sites and they have always been well run, but always the emphasis is on the benjamins. The staff at these independent sites usually know nothing better then the site that they work on which is a shame, I've seen pretty poor safety demonstrations and a lack of well kept gear. Good sites usually all have this in hand.

I think that a realistic way of improving these sites is to public ally post reviews of them, naming and shaming is so damning for any business.

All we need is a map of the uk. Locations of every site and a review giving marks out of 5 points for;
Staff on site
Staff approachability
Safety demonstration
Working equipment
Quality of goggles and lenses
Access to site
Parking
Value for money

Everything spreads by word of mouth, the sooner more people see what paintball can be, the more will take part in it.

... Unfortunately the money isn't there to help people go out to these sites, and money is genuinely tight right now.
