Self marshaling..an idea!

i really think this idea is only aplicable to smaller events. The bottom line is if you want cheaper events you need to cut down costs, and cutting the costs of Marshalling by even half would cut down on the whole event.

To ensure the basic quality of the Marshalls, you charge the teams full price, but give them a discount if they provide a marshall for the day.

Making the complete rule book available (online?) before the event would ensure that each marshall is up to speed on the rules.

This could work, and lowering the cost of an event means that more people can afford to play paintball.

Umm, you mean those 30 minutes when you get cleaned up, top up your paint, stand in the queue for air, possibly fix your marker & try to get some fluids down your throat?
Nice idea, but the chances of there being enough players available all the time is exceptionally slim. You could never rely on volunteers during the day either, that doesn't even work for walk-on days. A variant of this is how the current self-marshalling works, i.e. teams play in blocks of games with at least 1 block off, during this block they marshall a field.

The team's representative or captain sent to the captain's briefing gets a wristband locked on. Each person at briefing gets their team's package (everyone else bugger off, one person per team). Few teams send their lobotomized players to the briefing since that person needs to bring back info on how this tournament is using modified versions of some ruleset.

Sidenote: Referees should attend the captains' briefing to get the same set of rules.

Only players with wristbands can referee. Smart teams will send their alternates to the captain's briefing.

Each field has a permanent ultimate that is a non-playing ref. The wristbanded refs answer to that person. That person adds the wristband number of each ref to the scoresheet (takes five seconds) before it is submitted.

This'll ensure you've got someone half alive to do the job, and tracks if they do it. At the end of the day, the promoter refunds each ref that did X number of games their share of their team's entry fee (even if they were sponsored or slid in) plus the tourney price of one case of paint in cash plus that person's share of the air fee. So they basically played for free if they payed their own way.

Bad ref'fing and the wristband is pulled. Don't show up, and the rewards are not given at the end of the day. Whatever PA system is being used is what generates requests for more refs if a field looks short. (Probably need non-playing refs to supplement the available number to avoid game delays.)

My two cents,
Larry Janecka

heh heh liz, that takes u 30 mins?

Train on it, we get it done in 5 :) then stand about smoking for 25, which would be time to marshall a game or two.

I also see another side here though, if i am playing a tourny i dont really wanna marshall, whether it brings the cost down or not. I am there to play, i marshall every other weekend and its nice to just play without the grief that goes with marshalling.

Also i feel marshalling should be a little more stable, with consistant marshalls on one field, rather than each game having different marshalls, that way its fair all day rather than having a stint of good or bad marshalls :)

No way Problem. I go to the Captain's meeting 'cause I'm the field captain & that's one of my many jobs on the day, & I would object quite strongly if anyone suggested otherwise. The last thing I'm going to do is have me being the "designated ref" for the day as well as having to sort out what field we're on, organise the rest of the girls, be first on & last off the field, hand in score sheets, make sure we have enough paint & stuff handy, chat up the sponsors if they are there, deal with any problems, decide who goes where on the break on each field.....etc etc etc.

I still see too many issues with having the teams supplying an extra player to ref at each tourney or for players to marshall between games during turn around to make this a non-starter, e.g. hard enough sometimes to have a full squad turn up, needing all the turn around time if there's a gun problem, some fields running later than others......

Ever been bunkered by 3 people at once & had 20 shots to clean off yourself, gun & goggles? Ever stood in an air queue for more than 5 minutes? Ever had to fix a marker that's gone down for no apparent reason? Tried to get a cuppa in less than 10 minutes between the hours of 11.00 & 3.00?
I'm not saying that all these things WILL happen, just that some of them MAY happen & then you're stuffed if you have to marshall at that particular time.

heh heh Liz, yeah i have had all them, But pretty much got that sorted now.

All players maintain own kit, plus we carry spare markers etc just in case.

Drinks are the pot bitches job, or the GFs. They know when we are due off and norm get the teas in prior :)

Honestly, Pot bitches are a bloody saviour, Pretty much every tourny we attend we take 1 or 2 with us, plus the girlfriends, Having a pit crew saves a LOT of stress and time. And in a worse case scenario and someone breaks a leg (see pesty) then they can fill his spot.

So get some groupies hun and abuse them all you can :)

Oooh - you volunteering sweetie?:D ;)
We would LOVE to have a decent sized backup team, but only just manage to scrape together a full squad most of the time let alone spares. At least we have Jasmine when Sparklie plays.:)

As for GFs - well, slight problem with that one!!!!!:p Those girlies that do have partners, the BFs/husbands are all players themselves (how many of them got into it in the first place).

You're lucky to get pot "assistants" :p who are willing to get up at some unearthly hour & travel for miles & miles just to service the lucky players without getting a game in. What sort of bribery do you use? Then again - we're talking Apoc here so I don't think I want to know!!!:D  :D
