I can shout into my TSA all I want and it does nothing (it's sound activated), but when I shut the lid or when it's on a marker it works fine. I think you're right when you say it's the frequency of sound. It'll be designed so as not to feed when other markers are nearby so the range will probably be pretty narrow. See how it goes on saturday dude.

Sounds like the microphone on the board is dead. Other thing, if it's like a halo, try reversing the 4 pin plug on your eyes, depending on the board configuration (not an expert on Halo or Reloader boards, but I am an electronics engineer) if one is an input and one is an output and they are reversed, it might only feed with blocked/clear eyes, i.e. the opposite of normal.
