Referee accountability?

I agree with a lot of what you said. You are right about practice reinforcing the right techniques and positioning. One thing that would help refs do their job - having enough refs on the field. With the speed the game moves at today, 8 refs sometimes isn't enough to cover the entire field properly. Add in the trend towards more bunkers on the field and it becomes difficult for a ref to watch more than one or two players at a time.

This is a trend I see in the Mill events too - more bunkers, more angles.
I hear ya, Whale. My only point about the practice--or repetition--is/was that a structured coherent plan to achieve particular results needs to be in place to make it truly effective. Not unlike what teams ought to be doing to prepare to play.

As to numbers of refs and field design--they are the other two legs of officiating's three-legged stool. ;)

I don't really see this being pursued very aggressively except or until it becomes an essential ingredient in presenting the Pro game as Sport. At that point more time, money and thought will hopefully be put into it.

One thing I think would help refs a lot is radio.

A lot of times you see something in the other side of the field but your mate can't hear you. Run throughs would be much easier to ref with those since you could warn marshals of something about to happen (and switching views as Baca suggest would also be easier), same for discerning some of the who-shot-first-who situations.

I have never tried (yet) a radio system while reffing but noticing that it is not used anywhere makes me think it might not be such a good idea (why?).

Think it's time to stop my thread-jacking contribution ;)

Because you spend hundreds of dollars per event replacing the ones that walk off.

forget radios and numbered jerseys, one common launguage would be a start. its amazing how many times at millenium events when you query a call the ref cant talk english, i'm not xenophobic but that is an official requirement for referees, what sort of checks do they make for such a simple but essential thing

I'm sure Russelll will come on here soon and give a better reason. However radio's are actually used at The Paintball Association in the Uk. To a certain extent they are used very well IF (big IF) the ref can actually hear it in the first place. All radios should be worn with earpieces to aid this part.
Second part would be that referees remember they can actually use it without being told off. :p

Russell correct me if i'm wrong : I believe all of the radio's are actually returned safe and well at the end of the day.:)

That's all well and good, were that the problem, but it isn't. The problem is that we're seeing DIFFERENT incompetent yahoos show up event after event. No point in identifying them, as they don't come back anyway.
Well then, the problem is that you're obviously paying them too much.
here's an idea, why not get Chicago to ref, pay him peanuts, and he can demonstrate what good reffing is all about.
Perhaps Chicago has some like-minded friends who believe refs are overpaid and know they could do a better job for less money?

Would certainly take care of the problem. What do you say Chicago? He don't need radio's either, no point wasting money on those, eh mate?

I knew you would come in useful one day!

Uh, Missy, SARCASM.

If you've been paying attention, I frequently comment tha tref salaries are far, far too low to expect good reffing.

The comment you were relying to was a reply to a comment that unlike in the US, poor refs do actually return to ref more than one event. Sarcastically, I pointed out that these refs would not come back if they were paid less, as is the case in the US.

Come back when you find your humor bone.

As for radios, don't confuse me exlpaining why many people don't use them with saying that they shouldn't be used. Yes, you CAN use radios effectively, but that doesn't change the fact that many promoters can't keep track of their gear, so adding another expensive item to be lost/stolen each event isn't high on their agendas.
