Is it time we had a real World Cup? I'm not talking about Nations every 4 years (But that's not a bad idea either). But a world cup to see who is the best at one big event.

My reason for this is that there are a couple of people calling there events the "World Cup" and in the past the NPPL (Now the PSP) World Cup was pretty much that, each year you had a World Champion but that has gone now. With so many different formats and locked down divisions who really is the best.. not on paper but really the BEST. Let’s say Russian Legion play in the Semi Pro Bracket of the NPPL division next year and are unbeaten they will only be winner of Division 2. The winner of the Open X-Ball Division will again only be the winner of Division 2. Same for the Pro's in NPPL Dynasty might win next season but are they the best. Could Strange, RL, AA's, whoever beat them? If the Philly Americans win the NXL they I am sure will be happy but could Avalanche, Naughty Dogs, XSV have beaten them... I'm sure you know where I’m coming from.

So, what about a year end World Cup? Not Novice, Am or Pro everyone in one bracket. You can run the different formats if you want. You can have a 3-Man, 5-Man, 7-Man, 10-Man, X-Ball if you want. It's going to be the only way we will ever know who the best in the world is. Before anyone says Toulouse is the 7-Man world cup. I know this, but let’s face it if it's not in the states it means pretty little.

I'm not planning on holding one just something I think would be pretty cool. It would be like the FA Cup, you never know who will win it. Teams that have had a poor season can still pull out all the stops and become World Champions !

Or have I just gone mad :p

that is a very good point there should be a world cup but held in a massive stadium so there would be loads of spectators it would deffintly put paintball in the spotlight, would be good if it was on the tele too.

a great concept dood but totally impractical, where would it be held, who would foot the bill?

I like the idea of the FA cup style, teams with nothing to lose are gonna cause some upsets

who would foot the bill?

Well to keep the FA cup analogy - which is pretty spot on - then the bill would already be footed by sponsors such as BT, Nike, McDonalds, EA Sports etc. Can't see them shelling out 10's of k's of dosh to host an event with no guaranteed payback,

In FA terms, a fair bit of profit is be added by the 70k+ attendees at semifinals onwards.

Neither of which are likely to happen in the painball world - even adding up every UK team player to all 4 SF games plus the 2 for the final there's no chance. You'd need to ship in every tournament player from everywhere to even begin to get a stadium atmosphere.

Never mind the usual moaning about the accomodation, the food, the marshalling, the vendor stands, etc etc blah blah.

It ain't a sport if there ain't a sporting tradition...

Sounds like a good idea.....But where you going to hold it???

Most of the "pro" teams can travel anywhere, but the rest of us have more of a problem.

To make it worth while for a sponsor, they have got to make money, and to make money they need a lot of teams to enter, and a lot of people to come and watch.

That means it would have to be in the U.S. because there are more people playing there.

BUT....how about this......

Each country organises a one off event, that everyone can enter, and the winner is crowned the Countrys best.....then the event sponsors send them to a "best of the best" type WORLD event.

That way each country can compete, and we find the worlds best team.

A good idea but how wold it pay?

The only teams that will eneter are the Pro's or wannabe Pro's - the rest will be unlikely fork out for a sound thrashing will they?

But done on the back of a Pro/Am World Cup - maybe!!

The problem with the majority of Paintball is that all competitions are cup competitions anyway (apart from X-Ball which is laudible for making the the format break).

But the bottom line is we'd all like to see all players back together playing for the spoils

Great idea and I would go as far to say that if you charged people to watch (i.e tickets) that would help pay for it. I certainly would pay to see the best. Nothing extravagant, £20 for a weekend pass.

The World Cup's that I’ve played in the past in Florida have been played in a 5-man then a 10-man format. There were run by Jerry Braun and he's no fool when it comes to money. As far as I know the entrance fee's and vendors money more than covered costs. You could get rid of prize money for me (Some people wouldn't like this). There were Zero spectators as it was held in the woods until recently. And the teams came from far and wide to play it. I know "Some" teams can afford it more than others but I’ve ran a team now for 18 years and I always want to give them a goal, something to look forward to. As Banzai's we never did that well at the World Cup (well, 4th Place Pro 5-Man and some of the guys won the Amateur 5-Man in the woodland days) but we had a goal to aim towards all year, nothing else mattered, we always knew that we could put it all right in this one event the "World Cup". One of the things I miss these days are the wonna be pro's (as you guys called them) that come from the back end of know where from every corner of the world. We see a few now but nothing like it used to be. If as was trying be the best (Which I still am trying to be) I would love to go somewhere and try and win the World Cup in all the formats, Monday 3-Man, Tuesday and Wednesday 5-Man, Thursday, Friday 7-Man and the X-Ball on the Saturday and Sunday (Or whichever way round you want it).

I'm not saying it will, should or could happen what I’m saying is wouldn't it be nice :D
