Do people find radios really useful? I've not seen the need for them, especially as last week someone got a paintball in the ear and made the earpiece useless

At DW they come in very useful as it's easy to get split up.

Those earpiece's look better than the 1's we were using, we just had the normal foam ear inserts, not the actual rubber earbud's like in the link you showed. The radio's on their own sounded great, but the audio quality on the earpiece's really let them down.

Interested to see what other people have used with success.

Unless you fancy spending serious money then your only choice is PMR which comes with a (theoretical) maximum range that the frequency is capable of. Quality and type of aerial will affect how well an individual handset will perform

Don't get bogged down on maximum range - you will rarely need the full range of a handset unless you are heading to the farthest end of a site and trying to contact the safezone.
If you realy want comms at a distance then bring mobile phones on a network that has a signal in the area.
(And as a tip - cheaper then normal, non top of the range mobile phones, are more suitable for surviving getting shot, having good reception and battery life)
