Hate to ruin the fun, but I think I know what was wrong.

Newer Eggo IIs are shipping with a plastic spacer panel that is meant to be inserted between the two batteries. Some manufacturers make their batteries smaller than others, so that the fit in the Eggo's battery compartment is not snug. This causes the batteries to lose contact with the erm, contacts.

That will cause the symptoms you describe.

Another thing to check is the switch, it should clear the plastic shell, on my egg it got stuck up against the shell and would turn itself off and generally act all messed up. I removed a bit of the shell around the switch and it now works fine.

Off topic (sorry)

But those of you using Egg 2s' (thinking of getting one).
What are the necks on them like... they look kind of 'weak' anyone had any problems with them snapping?

It wasn't that. I put in some Duracells first, and replaced them with fresher copies. They are crammed in so tight that if I try to get the spacer wedged in, I'll end up hurting myself (which I usually do anyway).

Lif3: The necks seem fairly sturdy, and they are also replacable. I doubt you would break one from normal wear and tear, only if you dived in hopper first but then I've seen revvys and feednecks give up in such circumstances!
