The Basics
Proto is a division of Dye Precision and that is why so many Proto products look and perform like Dye products. The '05 Proto Matrix is nearly the same paintball marker as the Dye DM5. The differences are few and minimal between the two except for the price.
The '05 Matrix carries roughly the same body as the DM5 but just has different milling. The body minus the barrel and ASA measures just under nine inches long. The Matrix stands just under eight inches tall and is 1.25 inches wide. The stock feed tube adds 1.5 inches to the overall height to the Matrix. This paintball marker weighs 2.2 pounds. All around the '05 Proto Matrix is tight package. Most players will find the Matrix a little too tall at first but after a little "get to know you" time will feel comfortable aiming the marker.
This Proto is controlled by a circuit board in the grip frame. Inside the grip are the control switches that allow you to set the dwell, trigger sensitivity, and ROF (rate of fire). On the back edge of the grip you will find two switches and an LED light. The top button controls the power and the lower button switches the electronic eyes on and off. The LED light communicates the goings on with the '05 Matrix. The LED changes color when the marker is working well (green) and when there is an error (red or orange).
The body holds the LPR directly below the barrel. The LPR is recessed into the body and is adjusted with an allen wrench (included). The velocity is tweaked by adjusting the LPR and the Hyper2 in line regulator. The Matrix carries the Fuse bolt system. This is a one piece bolt/ram firing mechanism that eliminates a lot of the over all weight of the unit as well as increasing the paintball marker’s performance. This also reduces the number of service points and makes maintaining the marker easier.
The Proto Matrix has a 12 inch Proto one piece barrel. The barrel itself is well made. The Proto barrel is an above average performer made of high grade aluminum. The barrel is accurate. Light weight and well ported.
Dye’s famed Hyper2 in line regulator is standard with the '05 Matrix. The Hyper2 is one of the best regulators on the market today and works best in the 75-80 psi range. They are dead on performers that maintain their settings throughout the pressure envelope and very easy on the air consumption. The Matrix is a low pressure paintball marker is works best at pressures below 250 psi.
The 2005 Proto Matrix comes with lube, a manual, macro line, spare parts kit (o rings), tools (allen wrenches), and a nylon barrel condom. The Matrix is missing an ASA and a drop. You will need to pick those up to get the unit field ready.
